Empyrium resurrection

My 2006 is working out splendidly!!!

Top Tier Bands (blind buys):
Agalloch, Hammers, new !!!Empyrium [all in the same year just blows my mind]

Those and the Drudkh are top 4 right there

Mid Tier Bands:
Drudkh, Isis?, Novembers Doom?, Negura Bunget (delayed though, right?)

ol' Faithful:
Iron Maiden

Still out there:
Daylight Dies, Katatonia

Biggest Disappointment (perhaps):
Wolverine. I was just hoping for more metal and less rainy day sunday

Best albums from previous years that I can't get enough of:
In the Woods - HEart of the Ages, and even last year's Slumber and Klabautamann

Right now though, I gotta say, Agalloch is ruling the roost. I listened to it again today and even in 100F weather, I had chills.

Jesus, albums from both Agalloch and Empyrium this year, my two favourite bands.

Aye, this autumn sure will be swell. But don't forget Negura Bunget (allthough I wouldn't be shocked if OM is post-poned furter...), who I assume you like since you're not a moran

I had no idea you were into Daylight Dies.

That's interesting. "Rainy day sunday" is word for word how I would have described it.

You might want to see a doctor.

Yeah, don't own the new one yet (haven't really heard it) but I do own their other 2. Have done for a while now (I bought them directly from the band). Also saw them supporting EMPEROR!!!

I knew you'd like them -- they're like a more melancholic Novembers Doom. Plus you like Slumber. Eventually you should check out Rapture and maybe even one day Katatonia (the root of this tree).

looking forward to some awesome albums that i don't own yet:

Current 93 - Black Ships Ate the Sky
Six Organs of Admittance - Sun Awakens
Burning Saviours - Hundus
Asunder - Works Will Come Undone :kickass:
Agalloch - Asses Against the Brain

as usual, i'm forgetting about 176% of my list!

:( i saw that you'd ordered it and was counting on you for an opinion! i was gonna pick it up from Midheaven when I ordered the Om/Six Organs of Admittance split but money constrained me.

ah well, the sample i heard sounded bloody incredible!

ive got more 2006 albums than i thought....12

the best of the lot are summoning, belenos, drudkh, and jesu

still need more time with scald, morrigan, enslaved, bal sagoth, darkthrone, manegarm

some of the "meh" ones are aeternus and devin townsend

Was Wolves in the Throne Room this year? If so, has everyone already forgotten about them so quickly?

I think it can be technically considered as a 2006 release. I haven't forgotten about them and the album is splendid but truth be told it's one of those CDs that kind of burns your fingers when you're looking for something to put in the stereo. Much like Kayo Dot on an even higher scale, or Weakling. Truth be told (once again), I am rather in for some easy-listening stuff these days.

Ah, but I can't imagine people would so easily forget it if it it was up to par with Weakling, which has been the primary comparison in so far. It's sounding like a bit of a disapointment.

Actually no. It's just something I'm proud owning but can only appreciate on rare occasions, not the kind of stuff I'll be reaching for as a casual listen. I'm quite convinced that a well-balanced muaic library needs to have CDs with various "listening status". Not the easiest thing to explain (even for myself) but I trust you'll catch my thought.

Then again, I'll confess, Weakling provides a higher and more emphatic kind of enjoyment, bordering on sadism. "Dead as Dreams" is a dreadful experience.

Dreadful, yet transcendental. Like prolonged, conscious surgery, the result of which is a newfound understanding of God, the universe and everything.

But a bit less.

More official news on the new album. I don't think this has already been posted:

EMPYRIUM
"A Retrospective" to be released in November
November 2006 will see the release of EMPYRIUM"s new album "A Retrospective...". As the title suggests, this is a look back on the work of Ulf Theodor Schwadorf's unique band. Apart from newly mastered songs from EMPYRIUM's four studio albums, "A Retrospective..." contains a newly recorded and newly arranged version of "The Franconian Woods In Winter's Silence" (off "A Wintersunset...") as well as two new tracks. The extensive booklet contains a profound biography to unravel the history of the band and all its influences music- and content-wise, and will make transparent the whole artistic aspect of EMPYRIUM and its changes in the course of years.

So not exactly a new album, but I think we knew that anyway.
