Emu 0404 vs M-Audio Audiophile 2496

If it is the emu 0404 pci card it does not have preamps, nor does it have balanced analog ins. I used one and it worked great, very stable and reliable. The previous are it's drawbacks.
I haven't used the m audio so I can't compare the two.
But the 0404 does not have preamps.

I had driver problems way back when with my 0404, returned it after it bluescreened me to death, got a 2496 and was set for about a year.

Well, I have the 0404 too, I must say I haven't had any trouble with it! I don't think this will be different for the 1212m, it's a good choice I think.
I have to say I like my Audiophile, but I can't say I've used the other card so my only comment is that I wouldn't think twice about buying another 2496.

I think Emu is developed by Soundblaster. I would never consider using a Soundblaster product to record, but really have no practical experience with their Emu product line.

Then get something like the Echo Mia. It has 2 balanced inputs (as well as MIDI and SPDIF) and the conveters are good. It will require a PCI slot in your machine.
I had 2496, upgraded to EMU 1212M couple of months ago. Main reason being 2496 not supporting Vista.
1212M has better sound quality when recording (same converters as in pro tools hd system) and I haven't had any problems or bugs with it yet. I think overall value for the money is better with this card.

Yeah, my Mom just got a new laptop with it, and being her semi-resident IT, I got roped into setting it up for her. I dunno, it's prettier, but there's so many annoying built-in security things, and it seems like they were redundantly overlapping with each other and with the basic anti-spyware stuff I downloaded, causing all sorts of error messages. AND, it asks you for approval when you try to open ANYTHING
Those annoying security things can be switched off. Honestly there is no single thing which XP does better compared to Vista (of course after some tweaking with the security settings)
If your car cost $1000 more than another car that was identical in every way but that yours came crammed from top to bottom with packing peanuts because driving is dangerous and people need to be saved from themselves, you'd be highly unlikely to justify anything like that. Vista is no different.

I don't agree....though vista in its default settings is annoying there are plenty of architectural improvments that make the OS more efficent. I currently use XP onlyl because M-Audio has not released drivers yet for vista.
