ENGL savage 60 watt head?

Does anyone have? had it? tried it and wants to share their experiences with it?

Im still in the market for a nice head that would suit my music just fine... the reviews on harmony-central are promising, but that's from people who have probably just bought themselves that amp, and are always a bit biased then..

They don't make it anymore man, you'll have a hell of a time finding one too. I've never even seen one. I believe the Fireball is based on the Savage 60, but I could be wrong.

Heh.. luckily for me, if the savage is any good, that is, i found one, and not too pricey as well...

Im just hoping it's tight and pretty brutal...

I'm not sure about the 60 watt version, but I was in a rehearsal room with a 120 watt Savage and it produced some really rich, saturated rock tones. Very thick sounding amp. Since I preffer dry and tight, I'd go for the Powerball in a heartbeat, but for what it does, the Savage does it really well.

I'd imagine the 60 watt version sounds quite similar, just doesn't quite have the same headroom as its bigger brother.

hmm, didn't even know they ever made a 60 watt Savage! If it's based on the Savage 120 but only half the watts, then I say jump on that deal man. If you don't like it I'm sure you could sell it for at least what you paid for it..

the 60 Watt Savage is a good amp, but more for Rock Tones, very hard to get a really good Metalsound out of it that you will get with a 5150 or Savage 120.
The Fireball isn't based on it, the fireball has less options, 2 channels, only on eq and so on.
If you want to play metal (like almost everybody in this forum) I wouldn't go with the Savage 60. The Fireball, Savage 120(damn, I love that thing) or Powerball or Invader is way better for that sound.

Do you want to use it for recording or for playing on it instead of the amp you have now? I ask this because i also want one, but just for recording. So if it's possible to use for recording and it has a good tone, i would be interested too. If you buy one, could you please share your opinion?

If it's not too expensive just buy, if you don't like it you can sell it on without loosing any/much money.

maybe invest in a pedal to boost it if it doesn't have enough gain by itself.

Hehe.. thanks Oguz! i hope it will sound better, but i dont think a lot better though, just more realistic, less digital, and speaker movement + a bit easier to execute palm mutes on a real amp.. they sound like crap on a POD XT, no?

Im going to be pretty carefull though with the first couple of recordings i do, with a savage or another real amp... i have this tendency to do it all a bit too quick and it ends up pretty average or bad.. so i first need to find a solid setup, learn about mic placement a whole deal more, and simply take time for this...

I think you may be surprised in what it's going to add to your sound. Your recordings really need that breathing, alive element that a mic'ed up cab brings. It'll add this whole new layer of atmoshpere that just rocks.

I have a terrible tendency to try and do things as quickly as possible as well, but as long as you stick to the basics of what works well, you should be fine.
On a side note, I've been thinking of recordings something new tomorrow w/the ENGL.. it's been like 2 or 3 months! ahhhh!

Well what amps do you think are better...? ENGL are the best for high gain metal hands down. I would understand you might think Mesa or Soldano were better if you did not need nu metal type oversaturated distortion... But for this type of metal nothing comes close to ENGL. Not peavey not krank not mesa nothing!

I have one Savage 60 head from a friend at my rehearsal room.
He played with it years ago and then he changed to Mesa and the amp has been unused for years.

I used to hate it but after so many time I have to say that I like it.

We recorded an album in 2001, not great tone sadly, but I think the problem was micing.
