ENGL Savage

It still sound like there's something wrong with your FX out / impulses ... Cranking the gain won't help much i think... the problem is somewhere else (after the preamp section i guess)

It reminds me of the sound i got when using my direct out of my ENGL SE without any impulses, which means dry as fuck, lifeless, sterile...

Say you're right, what could it be then?
My signal chain is guitar -> samson s-direct. samson -> mixer. samson -> engl. engl-> mixer. mixer -> mac

i don't know much about using direct out from an amp and impulses, i just tried once my preamp out without impulses and remember it sounded like shit.

Anyway in your signal chain i don't get why you use the samson s direct > mixer samson between your guitar and the engl head ? What's the point ? As i told you I'm not a specialist in this kind of procedure but why don't you start like this ? :

guitar> engl > mixer > mac w. impulses ?

Or even better Guitar-->ENGL-->Mac.

BTW you still need to crank the amp up to make it sound good not just the gain but the volume as well.

I use the samson s-direct 'cause I want a DI-signal fråm the guitar. duh! ;)

And I can tell you that my volume is maxed to the point of almost clipping, but never going that high.
I still think it's the ENGL 'cause I just did exactly the same with my Triple XXX and it sounds fine.

Kinda funny that I can get a better sound with my triple xxx than my engl. lol.

Hmm, I'm not too sure about using a DI guitar signal into an amp...seems like there would be some serious impedance issues. Could you humor me and give it a try just with guitar into amp into interface/Mac?

hm. I'm trying this setting now.

edit:
can't remember if you had the savage 120 or what.
but still, hi supressor ? hi balance for me. and only operational if you have smooth mode engaged.
also. what about the contour switch and rough/smooth switch?

anyways. tried it, like it, moded it. gonna record something soon and se

No I have the 60 version. 120 has more buttons than 60.
Hi-range suppressor: the more you set it, the more mid/hi you get.
I have only 2 boost buttons in the pre section...other buttons are in the power section (bypassed)

it's weird...

kind of an enigma to me ...

The settings you use on the Savage 120 for those FX out recordings... are those sounding good when you plug a cab ? (good = usable when miking with a sm57 for instance... not too fizzy/overgained/bassy...etc)
