Early Anathema is easily their best. Serenades, Crestfallen, and Pentecost III are better than anything that came after. The Silent Enigma is pretty good as well, but Vincent's vocals are a tad weak. Eternity and everything after are much softer, with Alternative 4 being the best one. Eternity itself is just horrendous. Judgment is pretty good for some somewhat depressing rockin' songs. Hated A Fine Day to Exit though.

Jay, you have the best album from each of Anathema's periods.

As for the poll, I never voted for some reason. I'll vote Anathema based on the strength of the Darren White era and Alternative 4. MDB never really impressed other than a few songs from each album, but "For My Fallen Angel" is simply exquisite. Paradise Lost may be a blueprint for some doom bands, but those bands definitely improved on PL's formula. I guess I just prefer the slower, darker doom.

In the metal burnout thread, I mentioned listening to little to no metal in the early to mid nineties. As I was spending most all of my money on indie-rock records, the only metal bands I was into at the time were Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Hypocrisy, Senteced, and... Anathema and My Dying Bride. In fact, I would say that Serenades and Turn Loose The Swans were probably my two most listened to metal albums of that era. So obviously, I'm a big fan of Serenades. That said, Alternative 4 is my favorite Anathema album.

I'm having a total love affair with Anathema these days. All their songs just seem to fall in place so conveniently, heh. I picked up Eternity the other day on eBay and I'm just loving it. I still think Alternative 4 is better (from their deathless era), but that album is tough to beat anyhow.

By the way, the new My Dying Bride is really, really good too. It's taken a few spins to really appreciate, but there's a very strong old English vibe to it, as if it was conjured from an old Victorian cemetary funeral. :) I said it in another thread, but song of 2004 so far for me is "The Blue Lotus". For you downloaders out there, give that one track a try.

Paradise Lost because I've never really immersed myself in the other band's music. I started buying PL's records in 1993 and never even heard MDB until a couple of years ago.

I was surfing through the forum and noted your kind words. Thanks.
Check out www.serotonal.co.uk for my new band, SEROTONAL. There are downloads of our first few tracks. It is not heavy in the way I done before but it is still deep and honest - and we do plan to develop a more organic, heavier sound.

Honestly -- shut the fuck up, because you're only trying to create controversy in a thread older than fuck itself. If you're not aware that when talking about the "big three" of English doom, it means MDB, Anathema and Paradise Lost, then you have no business even talking about doom in the first place. It doesn't fucking MATTER if the bands are doom now or not. Either vote in the poll as it is or get the fuck out.
HAHAH
if you have these reactions i am going to do it forever because its great how you swear and whine because of just some comments i made about the poll and not yourself. Or give you a lollipop in order not to whine because i "created controversy in a thread older than fuck itself".
A band (P.L.)with only 2 doom albums out of the whole of 9 albums- is not doom. Common logic.
Anathema case is quite similar.
And i am sure that in the future Paradise Lost and Anathema will be remembered as doom. Definetally. hah

I'm really liking My Dying Bride these days, whether it be "Turn Loose the Swans" or even "Songs of Darkness". Solid all the way through. Had I chosen in this poll today, I'm not so sure if I'd pick Anathema again.
