So all three bands are playing the UK's Download Festival which starts a week on Friday, and I'm going. Pretty impressive to have all three on the same bill.

Basically, I'm familiar with all three bands' early works but have barely heard a note from any of their releases in the last 5 or so years, which I'm guessing is the material they'll focus on live. What do MDB and Paradise Lost even sound like these days? I'm familiar with Anathema up until Judgement, but I kind of lost interest in them.

So if someone could recommend/upload some recent stuff from any of them that would be much appreciated :)

Really, the only stuff I ever liked by any of these bands was early Anathema which is FANTASTIC.

I'm really liking My Dying Bride these days, whether it be "Turn Loose the Swans" or even "Songs of Darkness". Solid all the way through. Had I chosen in this poll today, I'm not so sure if I'd pick Anathema again.
You walk the correct path my son. Damn i recently listened to "Turn Loose The Swans" again after months, this album is a 11/10 masterpiece, one of those albums that you simply can't comprehend how fucking perfect they are.

My Dying Bride haven't changed drastically to these ears, as someone pointed out earlier in the thread they've stayed very consistent. As for Paradise Lost, they've got an almost industrial/electronic-tinged hard rock thing going now, although they do have a tendency to throw in a track from one of the first two albums live.

Oh, and my Download ticket arrived today too. :D

From a few years ago...

By the way, the new My Dying Bride is really, really good too. It's taken a few spins to really appreciate, but there's a very strong old English vibe to it, as if it was conjured from an old Victorian cemetary funeral. :) I said it in another thread, but song of 2004 so far for me is "The Blue Lotus". For you downloaders out there, give that one track a try.

I listened to this just recently. Songs of Darkness.... matures well over time. Both this and Mabool came out in the same year? What a year it was then.

Also, 'tis the season to listen to Anathema's Silent Engima. The 2 song combo of "Cerulean Twilight" and title track is pretty great. The drumming in particular is very Primordial-esque.

BLACK SABBATH
WITCHFINDER GENERAL
SOLSTICE
WARNING
PAGAN ALTAR
THE LAMP OF THOTH

Those other Doom bands are pretty lame

Pagan Altar nowadays. Seriously, Lords of Hypocrisy is one of the most sublime pieces of music ever.

Great album. Does not get nearly enough love 'round here.
