Het Duitse Enid is terug van weggeweest. Na zeven jaar van stilte leek het er eigenlijk op dat het album Gradwanderer (2004) het laatste lichtpuntje was van deze brok middeleeuwse fantasie. Niet dus. Opperhoofd Martin Wiese is terug met Munsalvaeche. Heb je even?
Met de speelduur van een uur word je als luisteraar weer ruimschoots voorzien van lang uitgesponnen symfonische medieval metal. Hoewel, metal? Na een minuut of acht krijg je de eerste gitaarklanken te horen die in het geval van deze plaat een zachte, zwevende rockproductie hebben meegekregen. Het is sprookjesachtig en ieder nummer wordt uitgesmeerd als de laatste film van Lord of the Rings die de aftiteling zo lang mogelijk voor zich wil uitschuiven. Er is niks mis mee, maar het vergt uiteraard wel wat geduld. En dat kan een risicofactor zijn anno 2011. Is Munsalvaesche daarom slecht? Nee. De boel zit goed in elkaar en nummers als Belrapeire en het titelnummer kennen een interessante opbouw. Soms is het mierzoet (Condwiramurs), soms lijkt het op een musical (Journey) maar immer is het voorzien van folky instrumenten, altijd die epische zangstem van Wiese en met regelmaat een passend mannenkoor. Van de vocalen moet je wel houden, anders kun je deze plaat beter links laten liggen.
Een gevarieerde plaat van Enid. Het is voor mij weer eens wat anders, maar uiteindelijk zeker de moeite waard. Liefhebbers van epische folk (metal) en avontuurlijke muziek in het algemeen kunnen hier best wat mee. In het begin zal het wel even wennen zijn. Liefhebbers van de band schaffen dit zonder twijfel aan.

Enid from Germany are one of those bands which are totally out of any music business while completely and genuinely into pure music creation process! Since my first encounter with the band (at the time of the release of their ‘Seelenspiegel’ album, back in 2002) they recorded only an album (‘Gradwanderer’, 2004) so I was fearing them to be disbanded or, worse, on an indefinite hiatus.
Surprisingly enough, here they are again with the new ‘Munsalvaesche’, always for Code666 label, and their medieval/opera metal has risen again.
To all of you who never heard about this band and its main man, Martin Wiese, I can soon tell you that this will not be an easy listening, for different reasons. First and foremost, Enid don’t play classic heavy metal songs with heavy metal structures and patterns, especially on this release.
Instead they rely mostly upon classic opera music (Richard Wagner on top) with a modern instrumentation. So one can find long compositions, with a lot of orchestrations, choirs and a lot of epic atmospheres in it without resulting it in any epic “metal” of any kind, if you know what I’m saying.
Secondly, Enid have always been a band whose primarily target was composing good music with a definite soul, no matter how long would it take or the length these songs would result in having. So the definition itself of “easy listening” honestly does not belong with here.
But if you can dare to walk outside the well-marked path, if you claim yourself to be an open-minded person with 360° taste for music, so perhaps Enid’s new ‘Munsalvaesche’ is what you were unconsciously looking for, and now that you found it, you won’t be able to leave it anymore!
