Anyhow, your examples above are why I would NEVER EVER want to meet Lemmy or the Maiden boys. I seriously would be crushed if I met them and they were pricks to me. Everybody has bad days, and you never know when you might catch someone on one of them. Though that one bad experience would stick with you forever.

I would understand if they were rude cause they were being bothered during dinner or their dick was in their hands but this is never the case. What it simply comes down to is some of these guys like to be rock star and all the goobers who stand in line to take their turn to kiss the band's ass only contribute to that. For god's sake have some pride ma! HAHA
You know on the other hand I could see how some guys could get tired of signing autographs and being bothered, ever go to a comic show and see the guy who has every book the writer has ever done so comic guy wants them all signed. You also see these guys at shows from time to time to have every album guy X has ever been on signed.
I was talking to a woman at Progpower about this same subject this past year. She said her husband is really into that but sometimes it seems to just go to far. HAHA

actually the band has little involvement in scheduling these VIP meet and greets.

That is what I have understood about these things. But you know what in situations like this and such stupid matters bands could make a stand and tell their labels and management were to stick it and that they are not going to take advantage for their fans like that. But the band doesn't make this stand so why should they not share in the blame.
I can't help but to be reminded of the night Tate dissed the five people at their bus after a gig. Well these people outside apparently were no in the Queensryche fan club sao that did not get into the meet & greet inside. Well you know I was in the Queensryche fan club a couple of years earlier when the band wasn't touring and before they started sucking. All I got was a couple of crappy print outs from someone's home computer, sheet of cheap stickers, and froms asking me to buy shit, it really sucked. But at no time was I offered to meet the band probably cause they weren't touring. Well once they toured again I was not going to pay the money for a crappy fan club.

VIP can and cant be cool. depends on the situation. I wanted to get VIP for Iced Earth when they came through in 08'. I was a huge fanboy at the time and was going to turn it into a weekend with sabrina. they sold out in like 3 days because i was lazy about it, which really sucked because i was dying to shake the hand of the tightest rhythm guitarist alive.

Sadly, no Schaffer but I managed to meet matt barlow afterwards after waiting for like an hour and a half after the show just to say hi and snag a picture with him. He was a total dick to his fans. all his answers were one word and he looked like he hated being there. I would have paid to see these guys and meet them just to see a smile on their face but that really pissed me off. if your sick, tell your fans that and they will cope with it. If you choose to walk outside after a show, you know the die hards are out there...DONT COME OUTSIDE IN PLAIN OBVIOUS SIGHT OF YOUR FANS IF YOU FEEL LIKE SHIT. he seriously looked like he dreaded every moment of that. i even heard him sign and breath all huffy when we asked for a picture. Tons of people would have loved to have gotten sick from matt barlow. i dont see how someone can play music and be like that when a group of twenty people who FLEW, got PASSPORTS and tickets from some random island down south just to see them, and give them a half assed thank you and not even make eye contact much less be happy that someone wanted see him do a really shitty job singing that night too. anyways rant over, still pissed at that and rambling. i had to work the next day, and felt like i wasted an hour and a half of my life after the show. Iced Earth lost its voice to me that night.

anywho. Had i purchased the VIP i would have gotten the real halfway decent superficial conversation via money. even some random happy BS for a minute that would have made me a happy camper and continued my Superfandom. sometimes money is worth it to get the fake person inside.

It was the funniest thing ever (not that he was sick) but there literally were like 4 guys on each side of him as he was walking pretty quickly to the bus. I do know he was sick though as when they performed he was constantly spraying that sore throat spray between songs. Minutes later, a couple guys came out saying he was too sick to come out, which I actually would prefer than a situation like yours where the dude didn't feel well and was rude towards people. God I hated that night since it was like in single degree digits and we were waiting there forever. I know my friend really wanted to meet them though, so I caved in.

Funny you mentioned 'Tallica, because now I want to come to their (tepid) defense.

Back in the good ol' days, before they really began to suck, Metallica would deliberately schedule time to meet fans outside the venue, after their after-show backstage obligations were finished. Back then my friends and I were friends with the band and we saw this numerous times backstage: their tour manager would come over to them, say "Okay, guys, it's time to go outside," and they'd all get up and walk outside to greet the great unwashed hordes who were hanging out by the fence, or on the street, etc. They'd do this almost every night and I saw them do it even while it was drizzling, etc.

Back then, they were really fan-friendly.

Later, that practice declined.

So did Metallica.

HUGE Fanboy. I actually got to him first that night and was asking him some stuff. I had actually offered him a grotesque (seriously absurd) amount of money to guest on our record (the new one out now) and a big endorsement from Jim Morris. he then filled me in on how he was taking unpaid time off from work just to do the tour and how it was just kinda a bad decision. And also that he didnt want to do it. I was totally fine with that. heres this dude that is probably getting a pretty coin from JS to sing and still wants to go home. he was just doing it for the money. that was basically it in a nut shell.

Asked him for a picture and thats when the grumbles started from him. you can tell when a person is ticked off and i could totally tell. I would have rather had him tell me he felt like shit and went on with his way. I would have still been kinda like pissy and WTF, but not like this.

It was shortly after when those die hard cubans came over that really sent me over the edge. He rolled his eyes and said, "great" as soon as my picture was snapped.

I watched him like a hawk. Here is a metal legend that i looked up to and whos music i fell asleep to not doing it for the right reasons and giving less than half ass to most die hard fans. Were talking about cuban flags with the IE logo on it and t shirts with his face on them. Great show tonight matt! the would say to a hat pulled down over his face and a nod.

come on dude. if you dont want to do this it does more harm than good to act like that. get on the bus and go to sleep. I will never support iced earth the way i used to as long as he is in he band.

Now Matt actually walked over to me later that day for whatever reason and we had a fine conversation. So years later when John was at Progpower I passed him and a whole group of guys coming out of the bathroom together talking about going to a strip club. All these guys were following him like school girls. It just struck me so funny like there was a gay joke in there somewhere.
I eventually grew up and realized this fan boy thing was just undignified. And nowadays it costs to much too.

ya for sure, im starting to see that. but in fanboy days, like how i was, it would have been totally worth it. Iced Earth records are a deep engraved part of my playing. I have studied them to the bone. I mean you will never really get the chance to meet them ever again. im in a completely different genneration. these guys wont be doing this 10 20 some years from now (maybe?). Like BG, when do we really think they will come back to the states again after this tour? especially now that they are talking about the orchestra project....Pretty sure I bought the biggest VIP pass i could have ever gotten with them hahaha only now if the show landed on my 23rd b day next march then hell would have frozen over.. haha

Jim told us what a nice guy he is and I was really looking foward to having a quick decent conversation with him, coming from someone that is basically a brother. asking him for pointers, how did you do this, how did you do that. -I dont really care how people take it. other people have no problem voicing their stuff so why not me. this is a subject that hit pretty close to home. Its my opinion on how that situation was. Just though i would share because i could have paid for a smile and a good attitude via VIP which, at the time, no matter how much it was, would have been worth it for me.

I did learn something from that though, to never piss off a fan like myself or anyone that was around that night. all of those people left to home ticked off and angry. If we EVER get anywhere close to that, I will never do that. I guess I come from more of a DIY background (I got heavily into punk in the late 80s and lasted through most of the 90s), where there is no such thing as a rock star or putting people on a pedastal.

I constantly wrestle with this in the metal scene, where people would actually pay to meet someone.

I guess in the end, the VIP is a product, and it should be offered if someone is willing to pay for it.

I still feel though that it is invalid for fans to expect or even demand that a band member be cool to you, esp when it was unsolicited, in your case.

As far as you ranting though, I agree you have every right to.
I just don't agree with the lashing you were dishing out to Barlow in this situation.

Oh okay, I got what you mean. Damn though, that really is a shitty attitude he had and that he actually was admitting that he didn't want to do the tour. That couldn't have been much after the band reunited too, which makes that even stranger to me. Agreed, the dude should've just gone on the bus and to sleep. I still feel though that it is invalid for fans to expect or even demand that a band member be cool to you, esp when it was unsolicited, in your case.

As far as you ranting though, I agree you have every right to.
I just don't agree with the lashing you were dishing out to Barlow in this situation.

So ive had very little time to meet people but those who i have meet were really nice. I even bought tony a bottle of finlandia (well got someone to get it for me)! hahah he was stoked. Never got to meet the guys in BG. but the Amon Amarth guys are awesome! so i just thought that people were supposed to be "on" all the time. Guess thats not the case... especially after prog power where all the members we met were just awesome!

no worries. I know people have bad days, but for some reason this just REALLY bothered me. Iced Earth at one point was on a huge pedistal in my so far, shorter, less experienced life so far

Oh okay, I got what you mean. Damn though, that really is a shitty attitude he had and that he actually was admitting that he didn't want to do the tour. That couldn't have been much after the band reunited too, which makes that even stranger to me. Agreed, the dude should've just gone on the bus and to sleep. When I read your thing the first time around I didn't realize he was just sort of strolling around.
