Anyone know of any software that will apply an eq to the output of your soundcard, for everything, not just recording, i'd like to eq my shitty speakers a bit.

I think you'll have to go with outboard gear bro. Something as simple as a little Behringer graphic equalizer will do the trick...Alesis makes a nice one too. However, it's not a great idea to eq your "monitors", but if you just want to anyway, I think you'll have to get some kind of hardware eq unit.

Please shed some light...

You will add all kinds of distortion, phaseshifting, ringing, that stuff. If you wanna eq your monitors try to cut the nasty frequencies, not boost the ones your missing. By boosting you also boost the not so nice behaviour of the eq. Sometimes that can be great for adding 'sheen' on a hihat (hf eq that distorts and adds harmonics that way) or 'warmth' to a vocal, but for your main monitors its better to be conservative with colouration. You can also set an eq on the master of your software and bypass it when you bounce your mix.

EQ should be used sparingly and only to improve your listeing position... helping problems due to speaker placement and room interaction (modes and early reflections). treating the room is best, but EQ properly set can help and not setting the EQ to just what sounds better. otherwise, you'll have difficulty knowing what your mix really sounds like. pretty much pissing against the wind.

if you're serious about improving your sound, check this SW R + D. you can download a Demo and get an idea about your room. it can be a real eye opener but you'll have to do a bit of reading first.
