Not a stupid question at all really Jacko. We are not well advertised. We are basically a group of musicians who collaborate over the Internet to record music together. More details can be found at the site Hyde metioned.

There are various forms of software that can be used for a strict recording purpose. The cheapest one we found is a program called N-Track. Others of us have gotten access to various other programs. When/if you get serious about it, I'm sure somebody can hook you up with what you need.

Just yesterday huh? Good luck..and keep it up. It typically takes at least a year of practice/hardwork before you are somewhat competent on the instrument. This varies by how much time you put into it. I've seen people learn to play the guitar (fairly well) in less than 4 months....because they sat down and put in about 8 hours of good practice a day.
