This album crushes more than Starr Jones on her honeymoon. Great riffs, well thought out lyrics, and production that sets the mood quite fucking well I must say.

Nice review.

It rocks my socks. I don't have a proper copy. But I shall soon. OH YES! I SHALL!

I do wish it had a bit better production, the bonus tracks from the CD-R Erik gave me had an incredible sound for the band. But other than that, it rules. So much better than Arghoslent.

It's pretty good. I'm sure I would appreciate it much more had I heard it back in the day when I enjoyed this music more. It is one of the better death metal albums with melody I've heard.

Yes, better than Arghoslent.....so far.

There are some melodic death metal albums that will outlast the rest, and interestingly enough, they are all from the early period when it was a lot more genuine.

Eucharist - Velvet Creation
Dark Tranquility - The Gallery
In Flames - Lunar Strain, Subterranean EP, Jester Race, Black Ash Inheritance

It's not I listen to these that often, but I know I could if I wanted. And yes, I realize I left out Slaughter of the Soul. I never yearn for that album at all, I'd much rather listen to Slayer or something. I've never given enough time to "The Red in the Sky is Ours", probably to Erik's dismay.

Not sure where Dissection fits in, but SotLB is equally as good as early In Flames IMO. I know everyone will say it's better through disdain of modern In Flames, but I think they're about on par when you think about it.

If Lunar Strain got a proper production (where each track was at least at equal voume), then I'd like to give that a listen with some fresh ears. It could be the best melodic death metal album ever!

Carcass - Heartwork smothers them all. :kickass:

The Gallery is good (even though I don't like DT, that album is a lot of fun), I haven't heard early In Flames, and At the Gates was better prior to Slaughter of the Soul. There are about 5 songs on that one that still smoke, it just wears thin toward the end. Dissection were (and might still be) amazing. At the Fathomless Depths / Night's Blood is one of music's finest moments.

I still think Edge of Sanity's Unorthodox and The Spectral Sorrow get overlooked. I really like those two records, and flame on, but I actually prefer those two to Purgatory Afterglow and Crimson.

PA is just too mish-mash for my liking. Crimson..., eh, just never was a big fan of the Album Song, and it has some boring parts.

Unorthodox and TSS makes no bones about what they are, hard hitting death metal with some melody.

And if they count, mid period Hypocrisy is great death metal with just right amount of melody and accessability thrown in there.

Dawn's debut is another one.

Crimson is fucking excellent, what an amazing album in every sort of way.

Purgatory Afterglow is as well but might be seen as too accessible. Also sometimes I skip to just the really good tracks like Blood Colored. my review

The Spectral Sorrows is on par and maybe better than PA, but not as good as Crimson. My only issue with this is the album feels like a collection of songs rather than one concept, but since Crimson was my first EoS, that may be why I feel that way.

Hypocrisy picked up where Carcass left off with Heartwork, never quite matching them but coming about as close as possible.

third review wtf!

I love Carcass, but I can't get too excited over Heartwork. Heartwork just feels like a fluffy version of Necroticism. Gone are the more brutal grindish parts, and gone are the depp throaty bellows from Steer. Heartwork is just true death metal for the uninitiated. Good, but there is much better out there, such as Necroticism.

Honestly I don't even like to compare Heartwork and Necroticism. The only real similarities are in the guitar solos, as the song arrangements, tempos, riff structure, and everything is extremely different between the two. Necroticism is very spacious, even the crazy stuff is broken up by bits of silence and medical reference samples, Heartwork is completely non-stop from start to finish, that album is completely aqueous.

Oh and they both kick a whole shitload of ass, that's the other similarity. :)

I never managed to get too crazy about In Flames's "Jester Race", but "Lunar Strain" and "Subterrenean" certainly are master pieces.

As for Hypocrisy, I think "Into the Abyss" and the self-titled are the best, but everything but their two latest have some good and even great parts.

As for "A Velvet Creation"... It's in my top-ten-of-all-time list.

Into the Abyss? Man, I thought that one was crap, especially after the four brilliant albums that preceded it.

I can't listen to Jester Race at all any more.

neither are rare anymore. i never listen to this band or style anymore unless it's the harder stuff like early EoS or Hypocrisy or early Sentenced.

Seriously, try North From Here. Suberb stuff and much darker. Came out in '93 along with Velvet Creation and Skydancer.
