Everyone else's Top Whatever List.

I started making my list about a week or two ago, spent an hour or so crafting it, then looked back and realized that there really was not any one cd that stands out as the best of the best. My number one could change 3 times this week. I'd say that is a result of a strong year in progressive music.
While there wasn't a "Hymns For The Broken" or an "Orvam" in 2015, there were quite a few cd's which grabbed my attention and stayed on my playlists for most of the year. If I listed them in order of most played cd's, Ascendia "The Lion & The Jester" would be at the very top of the list. But that cd has been out for 12 months, so it has a slight advantage over some of the others. Damnation Angels "The Valiant Fire" probably falls into the same category. There were a few surprises this year also. I was quite fond of Teramaze "Her Halo" & Waken Eyes "Exodus" and was caught up in Lynch Mob "Rebel" for a few weeks when it 1st came out. Ugly Kid Joe "Uglier Than They Used To Be" was a damn fine disc, as was Neil Morse "The Grand Experiment".
I decided to list these in groups of 5 instead of in order since I didn't have a clearcut favorite...here goes

Group A: The contenders

Ascendia "The Lion & The Jester"
Teramaze "Her Halo"
Damnation Angels "The Valiant Fire"
Neil Morse "The Grand Experiment
Kingcrow "Eidos"
Unleash The Archers "Time Stands Still"
Orchid "Sign Of The Witch"
Sorceror "In The Shadow Of The Inverted Cross"

Group B: Runners up to the contenders

Waken Eyes "Exodus"
Lynch Mob "Rebel"
Elder "Lore"
Swallow The Sun "Songs From The North"
Phantasma "The Deviant Hearts"
Ugly Kid Joe "Uglier..."
Ambush "Desecrator"
Diviner "Fallen Empires"
The Paralydium Project-“ The Paralydium Project”
Zierler- “ESC”
Vanden Plas- “Chronicles of the Immortals: Netherworld Part II”
Nightwish "Endless Forms Most Beautiful"
Symphony X "Underworld"
Kamelot "Haven"
Tesseract "Polaris"

Group C: solid releases of 2015

Queensryche "Condition Human"
Earthside- "A Dream In Static"
Dead Daisies-"Revolucion"
Demon’s Eye- "Under The Neon"
Voodoo Circle-"Whiskey Fingers"
Dark Tribe-"The Modern Age"
Lucifer- "Lucifer I"
Ghost Machinery-"Evil Undertow"
Death Dealer-"Hallowed Ground"
Leprous-"The Congregation"
Forgotten Suns "When Worlds Collide"
Orden Ogan "Ravenhead"
Transcience "Temple"
Darkology "Fated To Burn"

There is a million reasons why some of these cd's are on the list, be it a single song that caught my interest or a great disc from start to finish, but I would consider 2015 a very good year for our genre of music. There's about 100 doom/ stoner cd's that I could add on here, but I'm not sold on their staying power as of yet, since I just got on that kick very recently.

Hope I added a few to your lists of things to check out! As with every other year, you guys turned me on to some good tunes in 2015 and I hope to return the favor!

Happy hunting!

A baker's dozen from me for now (12 albums and 1 E.P.), so much I didn't get to! *sigh* Not really in order:

Iron Maiden - BOOK OF SOULS
Serious Black - AS DAYLIGHT BREAKS
Vanden Plas - CHRONICLES OF THE IMMORTALS: NETHERWORLD II
Sweet/Lynch - ONLY TO RISE
Pyramaze - DISCIPLES OF THE SUN
Europe - WAR OF KINGS
Michael Schenker's Temple Of Rock - SPIRIT ON A MISSION
Queensryche - CONDITION HUMAN
Scorpions - RETURN TO FOREVER
Vinnie Moore - AERIAL VISIONS
Symphony X - UNDERWORLD
Joe Satriani - SHOCKWAVE SUPERNOVA
Lord - WHAT TOMORROW BRINGS

Not much love on these lists for Helloween - My God Given Right and Angra - Secret Garden. Both make my top 10.

Angra deserves to be at least considered on top lists. I'm just not sold on the lyrical content. Fabio is good, but he's the 3rd best singer Angra has had.

One killer record that has been missing from literally every list I've seen is Borealis - Purgatory. Fans of Pyramaze and aggressive, melodic power/prog should definitely check it out. It might even be better than the Pyramaze album (which is saying a lot, I know).

EDIT: Another sleeper is Vola - Inmazes. Sort of a prog/djenty record with strange guitar work and really pleasant clean vocals, choruses and harmonies.

Check out my list, it's there. Excellent album indeed, but the Pyramaze is still better in my book.

Pretty good year for me. There are nine or ten releases I get good mileage out of. Most importantly, Vanden Plas released another one. While I may be THE uber fanboy, the biggest reason I am after all these years is because they never cease to amaze me. I also really dig Serious Black - As Daylight Breaks. It is really an excellent debut. Strong songs and a strong performance from singer, Urban Breed. My third favorite is Hibria -Hibria. Heavy, yet melodic. This band really brings it. I hope they can make it to PPUSA soon. They are on fire.

The Helker album rules big time, but it was actually released in 2013.

Did I make a list here? Is it too late?

The Great:
  • Native Construct - Quiet World
  • Cain's Offering - Stormcrow
  • Ascendia - The Lion and the Jester
  • Dragony - Shadowplay
  • Pyramaze - Disciples of the Sun
  • Stratovarius - Eternal
  • Unleash the Archers - Time Stands Still (for a long while this was my #2, but the shitty production really hurts it)
  • The Paralydium Project - EP
The Good:
  • Amberian Dawn - The Innuendo
  • Angra - Secret Garden
  • Astral Lied - The Revealing
  • Blind Guardian - Beyond the Red Mirror
  • Gloryhammer - Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards
  • Kamelot - Haven
  • Powerwolf - Blessed and Possessed
  • Sailing to Nowhere - To The Unknown
  • Symphony X - Underwold
  • Veonity - Gladiator's Tale
The Average:
  • Civil War - Gods and Generals
  • Eldritch - Underlying Issues
  • Judicator - At The Expense Of Humanity
  • Lancer - Second Storm (they kicked ass live though!)
  • The Storyteller - Sacred Fire
  • Winterage - The Harmonic Passage
  • Wind Rose - Wardens of the West Wind

And apparently I'm in the minority on what I thought were the worst albums I heard this year - Helloween, Hibria, Riverside, and Borealis absolutely head up that list.

Eclipse - Armageddonize
Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase.
Symphony X - Underworld
Riverside - Love, Fear and The Time Machine
Revolution Saints - S/T
Kingcrow - Eidos
Toto - XIV
Kamelot - Haven
Degreed - Dead but Not Forgotten
Universe Effects - In the Haze That Surrounds Us

WOW it has taken me a long time to get this done. 2015 was a great year for cheesy melodic power metal and that is style that got me into ProgPower. There were some disappointments this year, some albums that I had been waiting for a very long to come out that did not live up to the wait. But all in a all a great year for metal.

25. Cage - Ancient Evil
This is probably my least favorite Cage album to come out in years but they are still a great band.

24. S.O.T.O. - Inside the Vertigo

23. Worldview - The Chosen Few
I actually didnt think I was going to like this but I was wrong.

22. Nightwish - Endless Forms Most Beautiful
This the winner of Disappointment of the year with the next album coming close. I was so excited when I heard Floor was fronting Nightwish but this album does not show off her pipes or the song writing that made them great. However still good enough to make the top 25.

21. Solution .45 - Nightmares in the Waking State
I have been a fan of Solution .45 ever since they were just meant to be the second Essence of Sorrow album so needless to say I have waited for this album for years and now that it is here it just didnt click with me.

20. PROWLER - From the Shadows
This a thrash metal band I have liked for a while, all of their songs are based on horror movies, LOVE IT.

19. Gus G - Brand New Revolution

18. Disarmonia Mundi - Cold Inferno
Give Speed the award for hardest working man is Metal he makes the list 3 times this year.

17. Impellitteri - Venom
Rob Rock ROCKS period

16. Circle II Circle - Reign of Darkness
Best album they have put out in a while.

15. Signum Regis - Chapter IV: The Reckoning/Through the Storm EP
Great band the just keeps getting better and better.

14. Dark Moor - Project X
Some parts of this I can only describe as "Show Metal" (so over the top)

13. Ascendia - The Loin and the Jester

12. Shattered Skies - The World We used to Know
I know this is a lot of people number one, and while it sounds GREAT I just didnt FEEL it. Still a rocking great album.

11. Phantasma - The Deviant Hearts
Great vocalist and good song writing

Ballad of the year

10. Symphony X - Underworld
Another solid release from the master

9. Pyramaze - Disciples of the Sun
3 different Singers on 4 different albums 3 awesome sounds.

8. Immortal Souls - Wintermetal
love this band.

7. Stratovaruis - Eternal
this album reminded me why they were my favorite band when i was younger

6. Night Flight Orchestra - Skyline Whispers
Dog Gone old school sound!!!!!

Windows down jam of the year!

5. Soilwork - The Ride Majestic
This band always finds ways to keep it interesting.

2nd place song of the year

4. Kamelot - Haven
this album just keeps growing on me like an untreated wart.

3. Serious Black - As Daylight Breaks
I have not enjoyed a new power metal band this much in years. Listening to this reminded me of the early days of getting into the genre.

SONG OF THE YEAR!!!!!!

2. Teramaze - Her Halo
I have been trying to tell people about Teramaze for years, now with this album people are finally listening

1. Cain's Offering - Stormcrow
Awesome. nuff said

Hopefully this will introduce someone to some awesome bands they didnt know

One of my better every time I listen to it albums to 2015 has to be Non-Euclidean Spaces by Anthropia.

Just killer prog.
