F. Nordström interview (Dimmu Borgir)

No console or outboard pres, eh? o_O Damn.

Edit: but later on in the interview, he states he used his AMEK Angela console for Simen's vocals...

wow no wonder in sorte diaboli sounds like shit, he sold all his outboard gear and uses digipres only now? is he nuts?

The fact that one can open up a session and have all the plugins right there with the exact same settings and sounds seems invaluable; like giving up having a cell phone after you've gotten used to it, it's one of those things you never knew you needed but can't live without. And I personally think In Sorte sounds fucking fantastic, though definitely not what I would call a "raw" or "organic" production (and I wouldn't want it to be for Dimmu), which is where I tend to think good analog gear would really be indispensable.

Cool interview. I'm totally with him on the digital stuff. The value of being able to recall a session in minutes is huge. It's a little odd about the mic pre's, but there's nothing wrong with the digi ones, and I think the results speak for themselves. In my opinion, In Sorte Diaboli sounds really great, the best Dimmu yet.

It was also interesting to read that he slaved the SE preamp into the Savage power amp; I always wondered why people did that, but I guess the answer is probably just because it sounds better. Still, though, in order to do that, if you've got an amp that doesn't send signal out through the FX send/slave out unless it's fully on, I guess that means you'd have to connect a cab/attenuator to it just as a power soak as well as the cab you're connecting your power-amp amp to; seems kinda silly (but I guess a guy like Fred doesn't need to worry about that if it sounds best!) Also, I noticed on the back of my friend's Triple Rec that it has both an FX send and a slave out, both with their own level controls; any idea what the difference in the type of signal there might be between these?

listened to in sorte again since its been a long time...

to me the vocals seem to not sit right in the mix, the guitars dont have much high end sweet crunchiness to them, sounds like a lowpass filter has been set too low, drums dont do it for me. switching over to anything from puritanical euphoric misanthropia instantly sounds like wall of death metal brutalness slamming me in the chest through my monitors

maybe its the master though, it does sound super compressed... i dont see why he would send files to the ME so limited like he says but maybe this is why. could just be the ME's fault anyway

Mesa FX Loops are parallel so a slave out works differently than the FX send in those amps. With a parallel FX loop you can blend in the FX chain with the regular signal, so unless you have the FX loop level on full blast then you are still sending signal through the amp. The Slave out is just the exact preamp signal, designed for slaving... I would most definitely use the slave out for any impulses or slaving situations with a Boogie...

Forgive my ignorance, but i have a Mesa and have never used the slave out for anything, are you saying it would be better to record the slave out if you are going to use impulses?

That was a cool interview by the way.
