Hey Silh,
You read my posting wrong. I didn't say that Opeth sold out, I just said that people should listen with an open mind... and just because an album says Opeth on the sleeve it doesn't neccessarily mean that it will be excellent.

I brought the example of Metallica and Iron Maiden... 2 bands that really started out well... and ended up... not so well.

Also I didn't venture into analyzing the reasons why the sound is not the same. Some would say that Metallica sold out, or that Harrison ran out things to write. Either way, the undisputable fact is that Reload et al don't compare to Kill em all/RTL/MOP/AJF/Black album etc, and that Fear of the dark, Virtual XI, Fear Factor etc don't comapre to early Maiden.

peace.

Comparing the progressions of Opeth and Metallica is somewhat dangerous I think. In the case of Metallica, there is an undisputed simplification of the music, definitely warranting a "sell-out" label. With Opeth however, their music much more extreme from a theory standpoint, as they experiment with dissonance and unusual chord progressions. In either case, when talking about music, make sure to differentiate subject criteria (do I like it?) from objective criteria (stylistically speaking).

You people don't get it.

For the umpteenth time I am not comparing Metallica with Opeth, nor their fucking progressions.

What I am saying that fans should have an open mind: the name on the fucking sleeve doesn't necessarily guarantee that the music contained within is going to be excellent. Example par excellence: Metallica and Maiden.

Enough said.

But you're missing the point: how does this relate to Opeth?

Unless you mean to say that still life and bp suck as a matter of fact and that those who love it only do because of the mere "sleeve" or opeth logo, your retort makes no sense.

Once that point is established it erases all the fanatics from the equation. That's an important premise (no fanatics) to any thoughtful, civilized and meaningful conversation.
