can anyone confirm this "women" on the mayh cover. it almost just looks like the face is a break in the trees. if it is in fact a woman, then i am officially creeped the fuck out.

what about those telephone (?) lines in the upper right corner?:)

what about those telephone (?) lines in the upper right corner?:)

In an interview when the album came out, Mikael said he wanted a cover in the vein of Black Sabbath's first album cover. Way back in 2004, I asked if anybody noticed the ghost on the BACK of the MAYH cd. I don't recall getting a response. I have the Century Media release, but I would imagine it's on the later releases as well. Turn MAYH over...on the right side, there's a faint (very faint, and white/grey) from the torso up, image.... and what looks like an arm across it's midsection, like it's warding off something in front of it.

This image I'm referring to is on the back of the MAYH cd, not in the album cover...on the back, along with the song titles.

I went with Watershed. It's tough, cuz I know in the past I said I liked Deliverance the best, but I just get "that vibe" from the WS cover (not the SE cover, but the actual one). Plus the artwork throughout the WS album is absolutely stunning. And I think I may even put the Roundhouse at a close 2nd, moving Deliverance to 3rd.

By the way, the old thread could have just been found for this...

Still Life. And the re-release artwork is even cooler.
Travis Smith FTW

Just had a look at my MAYH cover. I think that might be a woman. Pretty damn cool if it is.

I also just had a double-take at MAYH. Looks like a woman to me. Somewhat reminds me of the woman on the 1st Black Sabbath cover. Yes, it's creepy as hell and I love it. I still like the WS, probably because it's the newest and there's so much to absorb.

It is a woman...I just posted that a few posts ahead of you. Mike explained it in aninterview back in '98.

^omg this is scary as fuck

Totally agree! I can't look at it now without imagining some (worse than) Grudge vibe. Whether or not it's a woman the MAYH cover has gone from hazy ambiguity to a haunting piece of art.

Thanks for shedding some light

After 9 studio albums, and 2 live representations, they haven't yet, to me, put out a sub-par album. I remember when Still Life came out, recieved top ratings, a lot of reviewers/fans were starting to wonder if they could make a run of good/great albums like Maiden did, up till the sub-par No Prayer album. No doubt Opeth have. The same can be said for their artwork. I chose Still Life, just for the art in itself. It just has that "Beauty in Sadness" feel to it. And the color red, though one of my 2 favorite colors, can ruin art or clothes, if overly done. But in the case of Still Life, it just helps potray the concept/ atmosphere of the album. i remember 2 of my friends scoffing at the Orchid cover when it first came out. I just told them, they won't understand until they fucking listen to it, and give 70's prog rock a chance.....listen to the musicianship, the atmosphere, and then you'll understand the double meaning of the album title, and artwork. As usual, it took them a few listens, before they were hooked.

Actually I remember reading that the woman on the MAYH cover was Peters Girlfriend back then. So Peter left his ghost in Opeth, hehe.
