I don't care to be #1...I just want us to beat out Devin Townsend wherever we can.

Something against the Devy? Hope not! I actually prefer Woods IV to both his albums from this year, though they're both brilliant pieces of art. Here's my top 10 (heavy) albums from this year:

1. Woods of Ypres - IV
2. Devin Townsend - Ki
3. Devin Townsend - Addicted
4. Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue
5. Converge - Axe to Fall
6. Mastodon - Crack the Skye
7. Architects - Hollow Crown
8. Kreator - Hordes of Chaos
9. Necramyth - Slaughter of the Seoul
10. Gorod - Process of a New Decline

Love love loved the new Matthew Good and Them Crooked Vultures, but they're not really that hard rock so I left them off the list since they're quite different. Tons of great stuff this year for sure. Honourable mention to new Minsk, Dream Theater, Vreid, Finsterforst, The Red Chord, Augury, Candlemass, Tyr and Wolves in the Throne Room. Those albums were bloody awesome too.

Mastodon - Crack the Skye

Ameseours - S/T
Augury - Fragmentary Evidence

Ahab - The Divinity of Oceans
Baroness - Blue Record

I want to first kind of introduce myself, I come here every now and then just never post. Been following Woods of Ypres since their debut EP and have been one of my favourite bands since.

I compiled my list based on what I listened to most this year and noticed how my music tastes have evolved in the last few years; very little metal in my top ten! While I listen to mostly metal, few albums really stick out anymore. Also, I'm sure if I look into some other people's top tens that mine could potentially change, but these are the albums that I listened to the most and had an impact on my 2009:

Favourite ALBUMS:
1. Eleventh He Reached London - "Hollow Be Thy Name"
2. Woods Of Ypres - "W4: The Green Album"
3. Them Crooked Vultures - "Them Crooked Vultures"
4. Dredg - "The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion"
5. Horse The Band - "Desperate Living"
6. Placebo - "Battle For The Sun"
7. Gwar - "Lust In Space"
8. Save - "Копилка грехов"
9. Maybeshewill - "Sing the Word Hope in Four-Part Harmony"
10.Marilyn Manson - "The High End of Low" [I know, its far from his best, but I'll always be a fan]

Somewhat justifying my top ten:

1-I really want to highly recommend Eleventh He Reaches London if you have never heard of them. "Hollow Be Thy Name" is a masterpiece that will leave you speechless. No words I say can do it justice. Here is their myspace, and you can check out the title track, which is song 1 on the album: http://www.myspace.com/eleventhhereacheslondon .
2-Woods of Ypres easily gets the number 2 slot. Progression to a different sound can be a toss up, but it ended up being a unique and amazing album that will always have a special place on my shelf.
3-I'm a huge Josh Homme fan, and seeing Them Crooked Vultures perform the unheard-album live in Toronto a month before the CD even came out made it a very cool musical experience that I'll never forget. Their sound is what rock should fuckin`be!!
4-The Dredg album is something special, super trippy, and they used some absolutely wild effects to create sounds and melodies unlike anything I`ve heard; its a miraculous joint-trip I tell ya what.
5-I've always loved Horse the Band and can't figure out why anyone would hate them. They don't use actual videogame music, and they are so unique, and I love the aggression mixed with such happy melodies and grooves.
6-I have never been a big fan of Placebo and I still don't understand how I found myself listening to it non-stop, but shit is damn catchy as hell and was my album of choice last summer.
7-Gwar's latest is my favourite album by them in years and the songs get stuck in my head whenever I think of the titles.
8-Save is a Russian band that play metalcore, and as generic as that sounds, they have a female vocalist that is out of this world. She puts so much passion into the shrieks and growls, and it varies throughout the album. The slams and (dare I say) breakdowns are so good that anyone would get energized listening to a few songs. I`ve regarded most metalcore as being generic for the last few years, so take my word that this is something you should consider checking out!
9-Maybeshewill is an electronic post-rock band with such intense melodies and amazing vocal passages from movies that really make you think.
10-And the new Marilyn Manson... well, I was looking forward to it so much that I over-hyped myself and was dissappointed, but it grew on me and I learned to love most of it and enjoy the rest. He fucked up putting too many slow songs on there. He really needs to get out of the fucking gutter though; comparing his shows now to a few years ago makes you worry about the guy, but I had a shitload of fun 10 feet away moshing when he was in Toronto in September. And Blah blah blah. I hope you guys get a chance to check out some of these bands if you`ve never heard them.
