favorite European band (besides Opeth)

well, I like a lot of metalbands and only very few of them aren't European ... in my opinion metal is something typically European, with a few good American bands (but most American bands just try to imitate, or make a shallow version of European metalbands). sorry for the many Americans here, but Europe is THE place to be for metalmusic :p
(and of course I listen to other music than metal too, not too much European stuff in there).
but anyway, I don't really get the point of this thread ... it's like "Opeth is a European band, so what other European bands are there?" ... well now you've got your answer: a lot! and without European bands, none of the American metalbands would exist.

At the same time you can't underestimate the importance of many American bands. What would death metal have been without Morbid Angel, Obituary, Death, etc.? Sure there was the grindcore thing in Europe, but these Florida bands as well as bands like Possessed helped create and define the genre.

How about thrash? Sure there were the direct European influences on the first American thrash bands from bands such as the NWOBHM groups and Motorhead, but it Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer that really created the entire genre. And Metallica's compositional elements, progressions, and lead harmonies circa '86-89 have not only inspired countless bands and opened the door for more progressive metal acts, but that sound can be heard in many bands today. Check out Godhead's Lament, the guitar harmonies right before he sings "searching my way to perplexion" - straight out of metallica's book.

With that said, if we're talking metal I'd say my favorite European bands other than Opeth are Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Dark Tranquillity, with bands such as Finntroll, Anathema, and Katatonia also up in the running.

If we're just talking groups in general, I'd have to include mum and Bjork. Also Tete and Autour de Lucie (who I just heard last week but is getting heavy rotation).

yeah, that's what I was thinking of. I believe Slayer Metallica, and megadeth have had just as much of an influence on the metal genre as European bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and motorhead.

I would prolly have to say Sabbath. Even though I don´t listen to them that often almost all the tracks of the first 6 albums rock

I don't listen to any Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest or Iron Maiden, but not because I hate them. Its just not my thing. I don't want to listen to them just because everyone likes them. They are the music that inspired the bands I like and now I want to be inspired by the Opeths and such. But again, nothing wrong with any of those bands. They've done great things but I'd rather listen to Opeth, Nightwish, CoB, CoF, Dimmu Borgir, Theatres Des Vampires, The Haunted, Mortiis and stuff. Those are the bands I'll be telling my grandkids to listen to just as my elders like forcing the older bands on me.

it's so hard to pick up just one... amorphis, the gathering, threshold, skyclad, dark tranquillity, in flames, soilwork, samael... and i am trying to avoid 'classic' bands (maiden, judas priest, black sabbath, thin lizzy, celtic frost etc. etc.)...

Practically all the music I listen to is European (at this point in time), but my fave euroband at the moment has to be Dungen, awesome psychadelic rock(with a teaspoon of swedish folk), beautiful soundscapes.
Other great european bands I like are Ulver, Borknager, immortal, old in flames, a bit of Morthirim (not sure whether they're euro or not but they're great) and other crap I can't be arsed mentioning.

Tough question. I like many bands. i don`t have one or two special bands that i am in love with. A few bands i like....

Arcturus, Setherial, Edge of Sanity, Bloodbath, Diabolical Masquerade, Infestdead, Dawn, Dissection, Necrophobic, Mörk Gryning, Entombed, Dismember, Susperia, The project hate....+50 more...most of them swedish actually.
