ok let's do this.

best solo on the album?

i have to say that by a hair the lords of chaos takes it just because of the phrasing.

Lots of kick ass solos on this album. The one in the Lords of Chaos is definitely one of them. Awesome phrasing indeed. I'm gonna go with the one in Iconoclast though.

Random thought: I seriously think MJR should be featured in a Derek Sherinian album.

yeah man, I think MJR should be included on a Sherinian project for sure. I thought the best solo was in Iconoclast for its fury and goodness of fit, note choice, phrasing and construction. I liked the MJR/Pinella duels in past work vs Iconoclast. But, overall I liked the album.

Bastards Of The Machine and When All Is Lost contain my favourite solo sections from the album.

I'm not a guitar or tech nerd, so I can't say for sure. I am pleased with the amount of P's solos on this album (four or five), although I still think he should have as many as MJR. No bass solos, which absolutely sucks and I won't hesitate to say it. Even PL had one! I'll have to get back to you guys on this... I have to say that the overall songwriting is far more important to me than a guitar and/or keyboard solo...

I thought the chorus for iconoclast was the best part. If its because of the lyrics than.....why the hell are you still a Symphony X fan?

Dehumanized, is the best solo. Simply because when you are talking about Michael Romeo, who can do no wrong in terms of solos and probably improvising, the best solo just needs to be the longest.

It's also about the lyrics, not only that. The choir shouting the lyrics after Russel sucks, for me is what totally ruins it. The vocal melody is another miss when it comes to the song structure, bad ass "dark iconoclast" melody, then it lessen a bit in the pre-chorus, then it goes almost pop metal in the chorus. It's like other album choruses, a more traditioonal and catchy sound sometimes it doesn't fit, and the risk is bigger in a 10 minute bad ass song. I think the chorus would sound better more heavy, with a different sinth approach, maybe a sinth lead and a more groovy, broken pattern drum. But the drums are fine, and the guitar riff is very good, with a very brief stop before the chord comes in, creating a nice tension.

Also, not liking a part by it's lyrics it doesn't mean you need to quit liking the band. Or I would never listen extreme metal bands, with cliche satan bullshitty lyrics "kill kill fuck your motha devil rules". But I think SX overall has good lyrics in most of their songs, Iconoclast (album) is overall an exception.

But it's just my opinion.

For serious? I prefer the instrumental parts in this song, I think they are one of the best in SX career. For me, it draws the direction they are going (or I expect they'll go from now on), bad ass throat cutting symphonic heavy metal. When everything stops and there's only Romeo riffing, every time I listen to it I can sware it's coming back to the verse, but when the choir enters, I can't help and put a jerk smile on my face. Listening to it on the bus, people look at me like I'm hearing porn or some dirty comedy. I get really happy.

Yeah I get that too; when I am out walking and listening to the songs I start moving my fingers in the way of air guitaring, (not too much though) and realize I have a smile on my face. The moments you mentioned in Iconoclast are very cool. I also like the part where the music pauses and Russell kicks in the last verse . Very cool. I dig the symphonic overtones as well. True SymX. HOwever, MJR's tone seems a bit different. I noticed that on the credits there is something said about reamping his guitars.
