Yea, that's why I said "rawest with atmosphere", because while the debut is their rawest work, it's pretty lacking in the atmosphere department.More a riff-oriented album, I would say.

MoP and AJFA are tied imo. Maybe a slight edge to MoP. I'm sure someone else has to have noticed this, but both of those albums have damn near the same exact layout. I wonder if it was intended or not. To clarify:

Song 1 - Both are energetic heavy riff monster opening songs.

Song 2 - The title tracks. Both long and complex.

Song 3 - Mid-paced catchy songs. Nothing to special about them. Though I will say, The Thing That Should Not Be is a killer song and blows Eye of the Beholder out of the water.

Song 4 - Heavy ballad style.

After song four is where the similarities start to wane due to the three shit songs on AJFA called The Shortest Straw, Harvester of Sorrow, and Frayed Ends of Sanity. However, each album ends the same exact way. Each have an epic feeling instrumental song, and a return to their heavy side to end the album with a bang.

Amirite or what?

edit: I changed my mind, MoP owns the shit out of AJFA as a collective work of art. Blackened, AJFA, One, and TLITD are all masterpieces though.

I think "The Frayed Ends of Sanity" & "Dyers Eve" are two of the best songs on the album. "The Shortest Straw" is also pretty good. I think Justice rapes Puppets myself. Puppets is still cool though. The big step up from Puppets to Justice is the quality of the solos & instrumental sections.

Harvester of Sorrow is probably my favorite song off of AJFA.

Also RTL has a very similar structure as well.

You should at least know all the albums by a band or at least wiki it first. However, I voted Ride the Lightning with ...And Justice For All closely second.

The first is always the best. I'm an 80's Metallica guy myself, with an exception to the black album, but after that, the other albums don't phase me.
