i'm thinking of getting a road bike. super ghey, i know. but i aint never had one and they sure look purty and fast.
the mountain bike i want is the cannondale prophet 600 which is fucking $1650, after tax more like $1800 and i dont wanna spend that much. i can get a nice road bike from $800-$1100 before tax, which is still a big chunk of change but better than $1650.
the problems are obvious: with a mountain bike, i can go anywhere. with a road bike, i am confined to the road.
any ideas?

hmm ... i recently went from a stretch of mountain bikes to a quasi road bike ... i just wanted to go faster and with less effort ... but I do miss the offroad beat-the-shit-out-of-it fun of the mountain bike ...

problem is, the mountain bike i want will be so inefficient on the road, i wont even want to ride it unless it's on the trail, the closest of which is 20 miles from here.
if i was rich, i guess i could get both but im not.
as the owner of a serious mountain bike for the past 10 years, im a bit scared to delve into the road scene.

up til this point i was convinced you were talking about HELL BIKE MOTÖRBIKES

:(
meh, i have a child now remember? cant be having my brains lying on the street.

no hybrids for me thanks. might work in your case but for me, it's like the exact opposite of what im looking for.
btw, what have you found?

not much yet...how is it the antithesis of what you are looking for?

So, you're just looking for a straight-up roadbike?

i had a hybrid in junior high. good bikes but not specific enough for my needs. not efficient enough for long road rides and not made for serious (if any) trail use. otherwise, i'd get one.
btw, jamis bikes are good values. as are kona, if anyone is in the market.

yeah, either a cannondale synapse road bike or a cannondale prophet 600 trail bike. see, the trail bike is fucking expensive and i dont feel like throwing that kinda cash down. i LOVE trail riding but the nearest one is 20 miles away (i live in downtown nashville) so im thinking of getting my first-ever road bike. a hybrid is no good to me right now.

bottom line is this: if you want to have a good experience on the trail, you have to fucking pay for it. im currently not willing to pay nearly $2000 for a middle of the road trail bike. $1000 will by a seriously fast and light road bike though.

i am not sure I agree, on the part where only and expensive mountian bike will perform well ...
had a Cannondale F600 not so long ago, and even with my fatass at 250lbs at the time ... I beat the shit out of it with no problems ...
I mean, I wasn't juming off of cliffs like Andy ... but certainly got some air and beat it on crazy rough terrain ...
I really think, $1000 should get you a more than decent mountain bike ...

haha. wierd. thats the same bike i had stolen. well, an f500 but the f600 is the updated version. anyway, i consider an f600 a fairly expensive bike, especially for a hardtail with crappy components. cannondales frames are so expensive they always put their own in-house junk on the bikes to keep the price from spiralling out of control.
meh, im rambling. my point was that a serious full-suspension trail bike is upwards of $1800. that's alot.
that said, the F600 is a fantastic bike. totally raceable. i greatly considered an F800 but there's no point in going back to hardtails at this point in my life.

hehe... road bike schmoad bike. I sweat my ass along on the mountain biking, just pump the fuck out of the tires, crank up the tension on the forks and lift the seat up and you've got a really heavy road bike :p

that said.. i'd love to have one if I wouldn't rather spend the money on more/better/new toys for my mountain bike(s)

haha, i was wondering when you'd weigh-in here. you're the "one" in the title. i forgot Tully!
i agree with you, but remember, i dont have a bike at all anymore. the thought of riding a FS trail bike around town isn't appealing. but using it on the trail is. it just happens to be on the other edge of the county.

hehe. never said full suspension, i'm on a hardtail. It's more than adequate for getting me around town. Personally, I like the extra effort it makes me exert. It's good excercise and good practice for sweating up the mountain.

Now, if I had a fully, no fucking way would I have used it as a "car" :p
