I first thought about this during Australian Idol 2003, when we had that dodgy Kelly Cavuoto chick who thought she could sing rock, and I started wondering just how many decent female rock singers there were. Two immediately sprung to mind:

Melissa Etheridge
Suze DeMarchi
Ann Wilson
Pat Benatar

So how many others are there? I'm probably forgetting some really obvious ones, but why aren't there as many? Is it because women are just not genetically able to handle rock music, just as men are not genetically able to handle asking for directions? Or am I just plain crazy?

Answers on a postcard or, if you prefer, here in this thread.

thats a tough one. I agree with all your selections, great singers. Belinda Carlisle is great, but probably more pop than rock. Jordis from Rockstar INXS is really good too. But yeah can't think of too many.

Debbie Harry blows. And The Go Go's were rock so Belinda Carlisle deserves a spot there.

I always had a thing for Belinda Carlisle.

I wouldn't class her as a really GREAT singer... but she gets the job done.

I'm struggling to think of too many more without straying into that "is this rock or is this metal?" argument that we're all so bored of.

What about Avril? I like Avril :D

The bird from Roxette (the name is ROXette, of course it is rock!)
