I have a Fender Squire II P bass that I bought second hand in '92. I've used it quite a bit over the years and it still has the same set of strings on it from when I bought it.

After debating for the past few years on wether to sell it, I've decided to hang on to it. So now I want to replace the strings but can't decide/don't know what gauge to get. I want to try DRs. It's tuned to B. 34" scale. The set that's on it now feels not that bad in the B tuning. Don't know their gauges though.

I want them to be thick and tight, not loose and flabby but I don't think I want to have to shave the nut slot(s) to get them to fit. I'm thinking this set of Hi Beams?

I really have no idea what gauges to get. Just taking a stab in the dark. Looking for some direction.

On a side note, I heard that the Squire II P sounds just as good as a mexican fender. Anyone know if this is true? And that would be a good thing, right?

I'd steer you towards DR Lowriders instead of Highbeams, as the Lowriders have a little more tension and just plain sound better IMO. When I had my Thumb tuned to BEAD I was using .115 gauge.

As far as the best thing for a p being used for metal, I can't recommend the Dimarzio Model P pickup enough. Sweet, girthy treble crunch. The stock Squires and Mexi Fenders are attempting more of a thinner, "vintage" vibe.

I wouldn't mind playing a 2x4 if it had a Model P and Lowriders!

csholtmeier - I was looking at those Low Riders as well and they seemed like they might be good. I may go with these.

Diblan - The .125 & .130 has me a bit worried that they won't fit well and will lay awkwardly on the nut but I don't know.

Thanks for the replies and info guys.
