FLIGHT OF THE VALKYRIES 2008 HEADLINER REVEALED!

I saw them live a bunch of times when they opened for the Gathering in 06.. They put on a really good show, altough I am not a fan of their music.. That was a great tour.. Giant Squid, the other opener, blew me away.. I absolutely love them now..

Depending on who else you book for this year's Valkyries gig, we may make the journey.
That would be awesome. I'd love to read one of your famous interviews/reviews on our festival or one of it's participants. I love the interviews you do for the ProgPower program. And the fest is totally worth the trip IMO.
P.S. Love your signature. :)
P.S. - I live by it. :heh:

uneXpect are doing a show at The Entry 1-week from Wednesday as well w/ Echoes of Eternity. It's the same night Coheed opens for Linkin Park at the X, but I may skip that and just check out these guys instead.

Have fun at Coheed since the EoE dropped off the tour. I dont know if Unexpect is continuing.

Seeing them was certainly the highlight of the Epica concert in NYC. After listening to the album so many times, it was hard to imagine just how they would be live. What really made me happy is that they didn't seem to use much (if any) backing tracks. The more and more a band removes live elements of their music to perform live, the less I'm inclined to want to see them. Unexpect manages to pull off all the "chaos" and not give up anything in the progress. Of course, it's a double edged sword for them because as pretty much everyone says, their style of music is pretty much love it or hate it. I also don't think many people are in the love it category which is why they haven't had much success in 10 years. I just think there's too much going on all at once for a lot of people.

Also, the bassist is fucking insane.

Yeah, I noticed that too - very little if no backing at all. There was so much going on during their set that it was hard to keep it all straight especially since I was having my mind blown. When I see them on 2/13, I'm going to be relaxed enough now to watch them from an artistic standpoint and see if I can figure out how they are pulling this off.

Interesting comments about Unexpect so far. I've checked out some of their stuff but I wasn't sure what exactly I was listening to. That's not necessarily a criticism -- it just seemed that there was so much going on in the songs that I couldn't get my mind around what it was they were trying to convey. I'm still hopeful of seeing Unexpect open for Trail of Tears this coming Saturday in Fort Worth, TX. Due to the lead singer of Echoes of Eternity getting bronchitis they have had to discontinue the rest of this tour so it would be nice if Unexpect and Trail of Tears play a little longer sets although I'm not sure if that's likely or not. In any case it should be an interesting show, certainly in the case of Trail of Tears. But I'm giving Unexpect the benefit of the doubt until I actually see them and hear them live. It could be that they are an acquired taste.

I think seeing them live is what really does it. I had never really heard them before I saw them a few weeks ago with Echoes, but I was blown away by their live performance. My two friends who went with me to the show, however, had a few of their albums and were really looking forward to their show. They said that the live performance definitely helped the album make more sense.

BTW, I just wanted to say kudos to you for going to this show. Please spread the word - this tour is seriuosly, seriously bombing all over the country and it's too bad because both bands are very good. UNEXPECT alone is worth the price of admission and I think that Trail of Tears will cross over to people who are not necessarily "metalheads."

Respect. Support. Raise the horns.

Thanks, man! Hopefully this tour will continue without EOE -- I haven't heard any word of cancellations and as far as the venue here knows the show's still on. I'm planning on being there in my customary spot right down front! I've been telling people about this show for awhile now and interest seems to be there but interest doesn't always translate into ticket sales unfortunately. At least the show is on a Saturday night so that's certainly a plus. I'm hoping for a good turn out especially in light of what you just indicated -- about this tour bombing all over the country. It's rather ironic, at least in the Dallas / Fort Worth area that so many plead for good acts to get booked, then they do get booked, and so few turn out for so many of these shows. Then there's so much bitching about why so many tours seems to bypass this area. I mean I know life sometimes gets in the way of plans but this seems to be more of a trend these days than an aberration. Hmmmm.........didn't mean to turn this reply into a vent! :erk: What I mean to say is I can't wait to get to Fort Worth on Saturday night, buy my ticket, and enjoy a really great show!!

The show I saw at Jaxx was only the second night of the tour from what I understand. It don't know if I'd say it bombed there, but it certainly wasn't a sold out crowd. All the bands played like it was though, they interacted with the crowd and got everyone really into the show. I'm glad I didn't decide to stay at home and those who did really missed out IMO.

Someone said it on the forum previously (and they probably phrased it better than I will here), I don't remember what thread, and I don't remember why it came up, but basically, I know that if I don't support both the large and smaller bands of the genres I love when they tour the states, that makes it even harder to get the bigger bands over her because the labels and the bands stop seeing the demand for what they do.

As you said Nathan - Respect. Support. Raise the Horns!

I just saw Unexpect last Monday in L.A. (with 50 people at the most) They didn't have their violinist, but still they gave an awesome show. I wish I could go to the festival to see them headline, but not easy (or cheap) getting to Minneapolis from Mexico City. If anyone can go... make it to the festival, the performance by Unexpect will be worth the price by itself!

If you are serious about that, I know a bunch of video game coders in my neck-of-the-woods who would die at the chance to code this. I would produce the project. Give me a call sometime and we'll discuss it. I think your drawings are perfect and I have sent emails to all my friends about the book.

Nathan

I would love to do the soundtrack :)

I just saw Unexpect for the first time this past Saturday night and they were AWESOME!! The live experience was so full of energy that I literally didn't know who I should be watching. Oh, who the hell am I kidding - I could barely take my eyes off Leilindel the whole night!

Seriously though, anyone on the fence about Unexpect or who are even not familiar with them in the slightest (that was me up until early last week when I started checking some of their songs out via MySpace and YouTube) should go see them live at least once. The show really is a lot of fun and packs a TON of energy. Beware of the bassist -- he is INSANE on stage...

...and even more insane when he jumps out into the audience flailing that nine string bass of his all over the place!!

Nathan you have made a great choice for your Flight of the Valkyries headliner!!

Block recently announced the festival’s headliner – “metal laboratory” Unexpect - earlier this month. As one of the most unique and diverse bands to come out of Canada, Unexpect mixes elements of black, death, core, symphonic, progressive and melodic metal; classical, operatic, medieval, goth, electro, ambient, psychotic, noise and circus music with an occasional jazzy touch.

“UNEXPECT has been a third-tier support act for various bands touring the US including Epica and most recently Norway’s Trail of Tears,” says Block. “This will be a very rare opportunity to experience a full headline set from this absolutely indescribable metal act.”

Additional bands will be confirmed and announced in the coming months.

"There are so many great metal bands with female lead vocals that don’t get enough exposure or get it often enough," says Block. “Flight of the Valkyries is a chance for those bands to really shine. I’d like to continue this festival for many more years and I hope that the fans will support me in that!”

Tickets for the Flight of the Valkyries festival will go on sale on Saturday, February 16 at 10:00am. Ticket prices are $15 in advance or $20 on the day of show. Doors will open at 3:00 pm. The show is 18+.

Advanced tickets for the festival can be purchased here: http://swordlordproductions.indietic...tomer/home.php

Flight of the Valkyries is the only music festival of its kind in the US devoted to metal bands with female lead vocalists. The festival showcases all metal sub-genres with the only unifying factor being that a female vocalist obviously must front the band.

The festival debuted in June of 2007, showcasing a variety of female-fronted metal bands such as Doro, Vainglory, Earthen, The Ottoman Empire, Visideon, Spiritual Decay, and Sirens of Titan.
