for musicians: what is your dream recordcontract?

There's nothing wrong with licensing your songs to advertisements. Your publisher will ensure that you get a cut. It's a bit like saying 'I wrote these songs, nobody else is allowed to hear them... they're mine'. A bit silly and defeats the point of releasing music in the first place. You want people to hear it don't you?

I'm friends with the key player in a local band who are currently organizing their own US tour. It's perfectly possible if you're an independent, you just need to have the know-how and smarts to pull it off.

But of course it'd be a lot easier with the record label. I guess some things just have to be sacrificed if you want it to be a bit easier. Conducting your own tour though... that'd take some strong organisational skills and a hell of a lot of know how.

Good thread, I'm agreeing with alot of the stuff.

Yes, the way albums can be recorded now a days, all you really need are a few items to make an album sound and feel like it came from a studio. i record my own music, and all i use is software called acoustica mixcraft, i use mics for the drums and vocals, and the guitars. to the people who have heard my recordings, they cant see what the difference is between mine and recording in a studio. obviously my music isnt mastered, but eh, this gets me by.

on the record label, yes, besides distributing your cds to places like wal-mart and all the music stores, i dont see what purpose they have. bands can hire their own booking agents for shows, so i feel labels are becoming less useful.
