For the gun lovers....

Heh, yup...probably because obtaining a CCL in NY or NJ is near impossible...hehe. I'm down for controlling the sale of "assault" rifles in this country, but the term "assault rifle" is now used by lawmakers to classify any "scary!" gun out there that looks menacing and will kill. When I think assault rifle I think fully auto AK-47. I can't think of one person I know that owns one. I think the debate here is more about mag capacity. Oh, and you can buy high capacity magazines for almost ANY gun, rifle or handgun. Relatively speaking of what is considered "high capacity" of course.

My gun in stock form looks like a regular black rifle. After I converted it (pistol grip, different handguards, gas tube, moving trigger forward), it looks like an AK-103 now. It functions EXACTLY the same as it did before (save improved trigger feel and pistol grip), but if a know-nothing cop saw it he would think it's an "assault rifle".

I just think lawmakers here in the northeast, CA, etc. don't know what the hell they are talking about half the time when they make ridiculous laws like this. Instead they should spend their time and money looking for solutions that actually WORK rather than fucking with responsible gun owners.

Joe: Got before/after pics? Or a pic of your rifle from the manufacturer or anything as it comes stock? Sounds pretty interesting, I'd like to know more about it :)

i understand that some buildings/establishments need this type of rule in place... those places should have metal detectors at their doors.. and many do: government buildings, etc.

otherwise just putting one of those on your business only accomplishes one thing... virtually guarantees that if your business is ever robbed at gunpoint by a criminal, who will ignore that sign, there will not be one other person in the building that will have the ability to defend the lives of anyone there, unless you have the extreme luck of having an undercover or off-duty police officer that happens to be there at that exact moment.

basically, those "Gun Free Zone" type signs read as "Helpless Victim Zone" signs to armed robbers.

For discussion's sake, James, what are your comments to those that think that in those situations you described above it is better to not pull your gun as to avoid an even worse situation?

I know you would probably wait until it was absolutely necessary, as would I or any other person that would take the time to think about it and not just react right away.

it's called discretion. simply having a gun in that situation does NOT mean you have to pull it out and use it. one should never be a hero and try to save some place's money... but if they start shooting, or it seems imminent that they will start killing witnesses, it's time to take action.

so to condense it: better to have a gun and not need it than to need it and not have it.

i'd far rather have that discretionary power of choice at my disposal frankly.

James, that's pretty much what I was thinking myself :)

Joe - that looks awesome, care to divulge total $? I need to find something other than gear to spend money on

Thanks dudes!

Hmmm total, let's see. The Saigas are pretty damn cheap. They are made in Russia (same factory as AK if I'm not mistaken), but have dramatically risen in price in the past couple years.

You used to be able to grab one for $200. I paid around $370?? for mine. This was October of '08.

The parts for the conversion totaled around $300 for me. I bought pretty good parts though and did almost a full conversion, so your parts may be cheaper! It also depends on where you buy the gun, etc. I'm almost positive NJ gets raped somehow because of our crappy gun laws.

If you decide to convert it, you need to follow 922r rules. Google Saiga Forum. There is tons of info there. I asked a ton of questions before jumping in.

This was my first gun and I had no previous gunsmithing experience. The hardest part was moving the trigger group & trigger guard forward, but even that wasn't too bad. It's a matter of grinding down rivets (dremel worked GREAT for this), removing them, drilling out spot welds, etc.

The dremel actually came in handy more than once. I had to grind down the top of my gas tube (they come crude from the factory...I used an AK gas tube), used it to grind the rivet heads like I said, and used it to trim my new buttstock down.

I've fired maybe 650 rounds through it with zero jams or problems...unconverted and converted.

Great gun and LOTS of fun.

No europeans in this thread!:lol:
I've never had a real gun in my hands.

So you guys, if you are in a driving discussion, or a fight in a tavern, aren't you afraid that someone could shoot you?

Well those are possible, yet unlikely, situations. I tend to avoid confrontations that will escalate to something like that. Lots of crime in NJ and I'm not willing to risk my life over my place in line, someone cutting me off, etc.

I do occasionally give the finger while driving though...:) I'd have to be really pissed off though. Even that is dangerous. You never know who is out there.

And honestly, about this notion people have been bringing up of fighting back against a totalitarian regime and such - am I the only one to whom that sounds like some slightly nuts backwoods militiaman talk? I mean, when in the history of the US has that ever had to happen? You seriously believe that people should have guns so they can march onto capitol hill and riddle "the man" full of bullets if he cracks down on us?

for the record, the only reason the U.S was able to shed the rule of the crown was because they resisted england's insistence on colonists giving up their guns...

the idea behind having guns to protect against tyranny has nothing to do with armed insurrection against the government - it has to do with the government knowing that they can't get away with certain shit BECAUSE the citizenry is armed

Totally right James. I work in downtown Cleveland a lot, and talk to a lot of the shop.gas station owners down there.... We have talked about this a few times, and most of them say they WANT citizens to be able to carry in their stores... Unfortunately since they sell alcohol no one can, sign or no sign... That's what people don't get... Bad guys will do what they do no matter what. Gun laws just screw the law abiding citizens...

here in southern CA, there seems to be a string of highway shootings once a year. whats weird is that theyre not even during the "rush hour" period (which is soon to be extinct anyways and it wont even matter what time, there will be traffic). not gang related either, just seemingly random highway shootings at night. they'll have like 3-5 in a month and then nothing for like a year. really weird. i woulda expected them at 5:30 on a weekday, ala Falling Down (michael douglas movie).
