...Megadeth followed Rust In Peace with Countdown To Extinction?

Scale of 1-10, plus explanation.

SUB QUESTION: were there any warning signs beforehand, as in, "I heard 'Symphony of Destruction' on the radio one day and thought WTF Dave" kind of thing? Was it the "No More Mister Nice Guy" video/song? How did things work before the internet? I really can't remember.

All that said, CTE is a pretty damn solid album and this ain't really a diss thread. But I can imagine hating it a quite a bit when it came out...

i clicked on this because i quite fancy myself an "old fuck" these days

then, a sigh of relief as i realized i'm not quite THAT old

also megadeth sucks balls now, then and forever

hmmm ... there was no backlash as far as I remember. I always lumped the first 4-5 Megadeth releases in my "excellent" folder.

I dont have too many memories of "CtE" coming out. I'll have to think about it. I recall distinctly when "Youthanasia" came out because it was on Halloween. That was 'Deth's last good album.

I didnt even answer the question. My disappointment level was a 1. I thought it was a brilliant album. As was "RiP". Just more good stuff to listen to imo.
Unfortunately I dont remember buying it but I remember popping it in the tape player in art class and my gay, Bob-Marley-listening type friends tried to make fun of it.

Third and final post in this thread: I never bought it...thats why I dont remember when it came out. I just borrowed it from my friend who was rich enough to buy expensive cassettes.
I finally bought the CD sometime in the early 2000s and one time in 2003 or so the wife went apeshit because she found porn on the computer. I remember the next day being "on the outs" but not giving a shit because I was driving around listening to "CtE" hahahaha

I am probably going to discredited for this statement but I always thought RIP while OK, was not all that.
It was rather progressive and less "poppy" if you will than the records bookending it. Megadeth does "poppy/catchy" pretty well ... they should stick to it.

I think that's the problem with the last few releases. They're not catchy enough.

So Far so Good was kind of crap also.

I always found Cryptic Writings a guilty pleasure however.

I had "SFSGSW" back in the late '80s and thought it was pretty lame
"Peace Sells" was much better

I'm a little confused on this comment because Killing is My Business and Business is Good is a fucking ace album.

So there wasn't much backlash at all? That's interesting, considering Metallica got shat all over for following AJFA with the Black Album. It's just as big of a shift on the we-wanna-get-on-MTV spectrum. Was it because Metallica became household names afterwards?

I remember reading a Mustaine interview back in the day saying that "Ashes In Your Mouth" is so difficult that they never played it live or some shit. So I take it they never played "Poison Was The Cure" either...

Best song on CTE: "Architecture Of Aggression"

It's just as big of a shift on the we-wanna-get-on-MTV spectrum.

I don't hear that at all ... does anyone else?

I think Megadeth have been pretty consistent.

The biggest shitstorm that happened in those days I think was when Celtic Frost released Mexican Radio as the first single after the super dark and heavy at the time To Mega Therion.

That took fucking brass balls ...

I don't. The only thing 'Deth did to turn me off was release some really bad albums from the late '90s on.
I also don't fall into the camp that loathes Metallica for writing their self-titled album. That was an awesome record. What came after was just crap.

I dont remember that at all. I may not have been old enough...the original Metallica fans would've been a couple years older than me (I was in 10th grade when Metallica came out) but it kicked the balls in of everyone my age. Maybe the older kids were pissed...but we weren't.

yeah the Black album was the biggest sellout ever if you were following since the early days.
when they played Enter Sandman live on some MTV awards show ... fuck ... it was like someone died.

No one else sees a huge fucking shift from RiP to CtE???? Jesus chrizzo, could you imagine something like "Psychotron" or "Foreclosure Of A Dream" appearing on RiP only two years earlier? Hell, "Symphony For Destruction" has about the simplest guitar riff this side of "Enter Sandman." Compared to a riff like "Tornado Of Souls," it doesn't even sound like the same fucking band.

RIP at the time seemed like too much techno wankery, to me anyway. I don't think that album was appreciated until later on. It certainly stands out like a sore thumb in their discography. While lauded as the best by many I don't think it overall represents them the best as a band.

anyway, why the heck are you talking metal?

Because a) fugg off, b) they're one of my top 25 all time evers. I think it was the "Go To Hell" video that originally got me into metal. Shit, I was even about to buy the Dave Mustaine autobiography the other day (which promises to be an egomaniacal train wreck of entertainment) until I saw it cost thirty goddamn dollars. No wonder nobody reads anymore.
