Testament sure seems to love stealing drummers from Slayer.

No actually both Dette & Bostaph, were members of Testament(with recording material).............before either ever joined Slayer........so you got in reverse!

Indeed he does. This is a pretty damn good lineup right here...two of the Bay Area thrash scene's top workhorses, the core of Testament, and...uh...I dunno how to define Steve S, but let's just refer back to that picture.

Out of curiosity, what was he doing before he joined Testament?

Well, Smytheeeee was doing VR for a few years.
Before that, he was in a Motley Crue cover band.
