turns out the 500's use a new and not as good OP amp, as opposed to the 312 my buddy just did a shoot out of with em at this massive studio

he said its because the api 500 series are more marketable so thus make em cheaper with cheaper parts :|
 
This is incorrect, the 512 and 3124 both use the traditional 2520 op-amp and have the same pre-amp.

The 1/4" input has difference impedance on the 3124 but that is the only major difference.

Other than that, they are essentially the same unit except for the power supply.
 
There is only one 2520 op-amp with one set of specs, so if they're using it on the 500 series then they're using it in the 3124 - if they have changed the design/production they'd still be putting the same op-amp in both pres.

It's probably more likely that your buddy compared API pres from different eras/production runs as some of the components have changed over time.
