For me:

Elvenking (Awesome, just awesome)
Riverside (Realy really great!)
Pathosray (They were so happy to play that I felt happy for them)
Amorphis
Iron Savior

How about you guys?

Elvenking (Come on. Me.)
Iron Savior (I wish they were just a little more energetic. Piet and Jens make guitar playing look effortless, and Piet's a giant ham on stage, and I love their additudes, but it's tough to play guitar and be tied down to a mic as well and really really let loose. None the less, very tight and highly entertaining)
Pathosray (fun!)
Amorphis
Andromeda (I confused their singer backstage with someone from Amorphis right after their set, asking him if he was ready to play. I watched like 3 songs, but I got bored)

I didn't see Riverside, which I'm told is the greatest mistake of my existance. I don't care.

Would like to hear more about the Amorphis set, any big surprises on the set, how was the crowd etc - Brian (or anyone else) if you have time you could start a new thread on them too, your comment was so far the only comment I've seen about their show.

The Crowd this year is a bunch of dead fish. It's horrible. Amorphis had to practically BEG to do an Encore, which is a shame because they sounded great. The singer came out and said "Do you want to see more or not?!" It was embarrassing. To put it into prespective, Gamma Ray's crowd was just as fucking bad. What the FUCK guys, step it up! This only happens once a fucking year, lets show these bands some enthusiasm!

I was impressed with Riverside. That was the surprise band of the night. I'm not that big of a prog fan, but they were a really good tight-knit group. Really smooth and flowed well. I also loved the fact they used a real Leslie tone cabinet for that real Hammond B3-like organ sound.

Pathosray... this band I was looking forward to and they did not dissapoint.

Iron Savior... their live show impressed me. More of an old-school metal feel. But then again Steve and I kept running in to these guys at the hotel and the restaurant next door... so I like these guys just by the fact they're a bunch of cool guys. :)

Amorphis was OK with me. Just not a death growl fan. The clean vocals are good. As far as melo-death bands go, I prefer Mercenary or Scar Symmetry. But Amorphis was a very talented band and glad I saw them live though.

Andromeda... not a huge prog fan, but their live show as excellent.

Elvenking... if folk metal is your bag, then they're fine. Just not me :) Good live show though.

100% agreed. That crowd was godawful. A bunch of wankers who were too upset that Amorphis didn't sound like every other Helloween and Dream Theater clone out there. Seriously, during the encore break we (the middle of the first two rows that is) tried starting a chant -- no crowd response. Jesus Christ, that band is legendary and that's the reception they get. Even if you're not a fan of harsh vocals, they had so much passion, intensity, emotion, energy, and integrity up there on stage that it was nearly impossible not to like them.

But Aki, yeah I'll start a thread and write a review of their set once I do my laundry and get some lunch \m/

Edit: might as well list the order of the other bands though

Elvenking
Andromeda
Riverside (the less I say about their set, the better. I enjoy their music. Do not enjoy their show.)

skipped Iron Savior to eat, showed up too late for Pathosray

Tie 1. Riverside (Mind boggling!! Just plain awesome, what a sound, the pure talent of the evening)
Tie 1. Amorphis (Kicked my ass like I knew they would, Flawless! Heavy, Ripped right through me)
3. Elvenking (I eat this stuff up! Fun Fun Fun!)
4. Pathosray (Very Original Prog metal, they were much heavier than I thought they'd be, great set)
5. Andromeda (Another cool set! At time it felt a little disjointed to me, but they were awesome)
6. Iron Saviour (Not bad but it's typical power fare which bores me a bit, but they were still pretty cool)

There is no way Saturday will come close...

Why can't people enjoy the show in their own way? Gamma Ray annoyed me with their "stand up, this isn't a television show" crap - if you want to sit back and enjoy the music, that's your right as a paying consumer. Don't dictate to me the way I should act at a concert. Just because I'm not pumping my fist in the air like a moron doesn't mean I'm not enjoying the show.

1. Iron Savior - Great power metal and they had a blast doing it.
2. Andromeda - I love their early stuff, but they were tight all around.
3. Riverside - I really dig this band. Their guitar player rules and an a well rounded band.
I missed Pathosray (SHIT!!) and elvenking (really don't care)

Amorphis - To be honest, they aren't prog or power and they shouldn't been a headliner for this fest. I didn't agree with that choice, but it is what it is.

for me, there was amorphis.

and elvenking was pretty cool, tho the mix left a lot to be desired. i definately need to stock up on their stuff to get a better feel for their sound.

pretty much all the rest i could have done without. most of it was prog-rock to the point of not being metal at all. i realize this fest has a large audience for that kind of thing, but it gets really sleepy to me really fast.

1) Iron Savior
2) The rest

I was just kinda bummed that Piet had to deal with stage problems the entire time. But, he took it like a champ. Class act, 100%.

Energy feeds energy. If the crowd doesn't feed the band, the band can't feed the crowd, and all of the sudden, you have a band that "sucks," is "flat", and "has no stage presence".

I don't know. I always found a concert experience to be an interactive thing. Otherwise, why not just buy a Gamma Ray DVD and watch it in your living room. It'd be about as exciting, and you'd save gas.
