Friday Night in order of preference

1.Iron Savior(Also my #1 band of the entire festival.) COME ON, PIET! PIET!
2.Amorphis
3.Andromeda

On a side note, Riverside almost put me to sleep. Technically they were very sound musically speaking, but for the most part any tpe of punch or raw attitude was missing entirely from their songs. No power was coming from the stage during their set, IMO. Just not my cup o' brew.

Why can't people enjoy the show in their own way? Gamma Ray annoyed me with their "stand up, this isn't a television show" crap - if you want to sit back and enjoy the music, that's your right as a paying consumer.

Agreed – I find this aggravating as well. I’d rather see a band get the crowd involved by delivering a kick-ass musical performance, rather than leading a “repeat-after-me” sing-along, starting the chant/fist-pump thing, or begging the crowd to “make some noise.”

As for Friday night, highlights for me were Pathosray and Elvenking. Great stuff!

I did like the music from Amorphis, but just can’t get into the harsh vocals. (Although I was amazed that the same person was doing both the harsh and clean vocals…I don’t know how he managed to pull that off!)

For me:

Elvenking (Awesome, just awesome)
Riverside (Realy really great!)
Pathosray (They were so happy to play that I felt happy for them)
Amorphis
Iron Savior

How about you guys?

I'd have to say that in my book, they were all excellent. Elvenking was energetic, Andromeda was tight and just jaw dropping in their playing, Pathosray was really energetic, AND they were tight and jaw dropping. Iron Savior was fucking amazing (from the front and center), Amorphis played the songs I wanted to hear from Elegy and Tuonela, and Riverside put together a great musical soundscape. It may have been the best overall day of music of any Prog Power.

Amorphis (one of the most enjoyable shows I've ever seen)
Andromeda (knew these guys could play but DAMN!)
Elvenking (didn't know much coming in but these guys delivered; pleasantly surprised)
Iron Savior (very enjoyable and a ton of fun)
Pathosray (didn't know zip about them before but am quite impressed after)
Riverside (extraordinary musicianship but too much of a departure from the general theme of the evening for me to get in the mood for)

Pathosray was AMAZING! :)

Hmmmm I've heard this before... somewhere...no wait.. let me think.... :p

I was there for Pathosray and they didn't disappoint - they were phenominal... plain n' simple.. I did check out Amorphis but when I went into the room, he started cookie monster vocals and that was enough for me... Just not for my ears... Fabio n' Gianpaolo were talkin about Riverside so much I figured to check 'em out - I went into the set hating what I heard on CD to leaving the set sayin 'these guys are f'n awesome!' and wanting to get the CDs... I missed the rest of the bands...

-- Amorphis
-- Riverside -- it's not alll about the crunch sometimes...and they had a stellar mix. I thought they were much heavier live than their CDs would suggest
-- Pathosray, except that their 33-minute set was too short for 'em...and threw off the whole rest of the night schedule-wise :erk:
-- Elvenking...but I got kicked out of the camera well early. It also sucked that several of their numerous sponsors got there too late to enjoy the first or second song since they started early

-- I only got to 'see' Andromeda from outside since they started early and I was outside for Amorphis' autographing, but I liked what I heard...I'm kicking myself for not bringing my CD liners to get autographed.

-- Didn't see: Iron Savior. I got there too late to see ANY of their set, since the bands were running wayy early, and I like 'em, too. :(

Pathosray (great way to open the festival)
Amorphis (tight as my snare drum)
Andromeda (love the proggy stuff :)
Elvenking (only saw about half the set, wish I would have seen it all)
Iron Savior (not really my cup of tea, but sounded tight)
Riverside (couldn't stop yawning, I just cannot get into these guys. Their melodies just don't move me in any way. I do respect them for what they do, but just not for me)

Anyone know why Pathosray's and Elvenking's sets were so short?

I know Pathosray could have played another song or two, and Elvenking could have probably played another song also. Just wondering why they wouldn't take advantage of the full 45 min of allotted time?

Riverside - I was looking forward to them, but worried that they would be too mellow (and therefore a bit boring) live. I was impressed as hell. They played a fairly heavy set and the sound was the best of the fest IMO.

Iron Savior - I was expecting pretty generic power metal (though that's a bit redundant). Although it was just that, they did what they did very well. I was impressed by Piet's vocals. He's not the greatest singer out there, but, like the band, he did what he did without flaw. I liked them a lot.

Amorphis - A bit too much of the growlies for me. I would have preferred to a bit more balance. They didn't play "The Way," which is a huge downer. Great energy. Great performance!

Elvenking - I liked their set, though I didn't love it. I was very distracted by the violin player just standing there for 70% of every song. I would think they could have given him some backing melody to play very quietly rather than just standing there. I wasn't horribly impressed by the singer either. He kept stopping to take huge gulps of air. His vocals were otherwise strong. I'll likely pick up a CD from these guys.

Andromeda - Technically they were great, but they just didn't do anything for me. They are one of those prog metal bands that way technical, but just come across as emotionless IMO. I didn't care for them at all.

Pathosray - We got there late and missed their entire set. I kept hearing that they were very good. Bummed that I missed them.

1. Iron Savior - German Power. Maximum Crunch. Never gets old to me.

2. Elvenking - Very nice. The only CD of theirs I'd heard before is The Winter Wake, and I liked it...they didn't dissapoint. Rough vocals at places were fine since they were not the kind of crappy unintelligible death/black growling I can't understand or endure.

3. Andromeda - Surprisingly tight. Not really my standard cup of tea, but a thoroughly good enjoyable show.

4. Pathosray - Crunchier than I thought. Entertaining.

5. Riverside - I just wasn't in the mood somehow. They seemed out of place here. Maybe just too mellow. If I'd been in the mood for Pink Floyd music maybe. I thought they were fine, and I'm sure I'll enjoy their CDs someday, but they just weren't what I was looking for live at this fest.

6. Amorphis - Maybe barely anyone wanted an encore, I sure didn't. If it weren't for the next year's announcement aftewards, I'd have completely left early. I don't like death growling in any form. I have their latest 2 CDs and they are nice. I took those 2 CDs and created one mix CD with clean melodic vocals and I LOVE those tunes. I have no idea why they did so much growlin in their setlist since it isn't either Prog or Power.

I'll post this including the sets I only saw little of.

1. Amorphis (excellent performance, full of energy and kick)
2. Riverside (beautiful, spiritual experience)
3. Pathosray (the best opener ProgPower has ever had)
4. Elvenking (had I seen more than the 1 song I saw, they'd probably be on the top of my list)
5. Andromeda (only caught 2 songs, tight but I wasn't feeling well)
6. Iron Savior (didn't really care for, dinner time)

I have no idea why they did so much growlin in their setlist since it isn't either Prog or Power.

You are wrong. There's plenty of growling in prog metal (even in some power metal too). Look at Opeth and Orphaned Land and tell me they can't be considered Prog. Even Riverside who's known to be a prog force has growls.

1. Riverside - not metal, not prog, not right for this fest, etc... yeah yeah yeah whatever. Great sound, different from everybody else, a pure sonic delight.
2. Iron Savior - straight ahead balls to the wall Priest like old school kick ass fist pumping German metal.
3. Pathosray - Loved this band right out of the gate. "Scent of Snow" was kick ass. Maybe should've played a cover tune if they were short on time????
4. Andromeda - Keep trying to like this band. Great musicians, little to no emotion in the songs though. Still bought the new CD.
5. Elvenking - Want to like them more, but....eh. Appreciated the singer's enthusiasm. Violin a nice touch, although he should've also played keys. Big negative on the sequenced background vox....they got 6 guys in the band...you're telling me that only one of them can sing...?
6. Amorphis - I had high hopes, but was worried there was going to be too much growlie vox for me....and that pretty much chased me out of the arena. I kept trying to come back in when I recognized the newer stuff I liked, but then got chased out again and again. Finally gave up.

1. Iron Savior ( They kicked total Ass! Great in your face Traditional Power Metal cant get enough! )
2. Elvenking ( Different, but heavy as Hell and good vocals) :heh:
3. Pathosray ( Great band And they had fun and that is what it is all about )
4. Andromeda ( Good Prog band they have some very catchy songs):)
5. Riverside ( Almost put me into musical brain death. Very talented band but not me at all only seen 1/4 of the set and left ):ill:
6. Amorphis ( was already back at my room enjoying some good food. Dont like this kind of metal at all. Including Opeth and the any band that sounds like them:Puke:

1. Amorphis
2. Andromeda
3. Elvenking
4. Iron Savior

Missed Pathosray unintentionally, and purposefully passed on Riverside. Was hoping for more from Iron Savior. Maybe they were built up so much in my head that it didn't seem to deliver, though it was a great set.

To me it was simple
Amorphis - Ruled the night....period.
Riverside
Pathosray
Elvenking
Andromeda
Iron Savior (only because I saw 3 similar bands the night before, and 2 of those 3 were better than I.S.)

Kinda shows my preference in music:

Pathosray
Andromeda
Riverside

I didn't care much for Amorphis or Elvenking and I stepped out on Iron Savior's set for dinner.
