Friday Night in order of preference

Honestly, after Thursday night, Friday night was a snooze fest for me. Saturday night more than made up for my boredom on Friday though. It's not that I thought Friday night's bands sucked, they just weren't my thing I guess. My top pick for Friday night would have to be Andromeda and I don't consider myself a fan of this band either.

Thursday night was the best musical night of the entire weekend, IMO.:notworthy:rock::kickass:

1. Andromeda - Suffered from a bad mix and a lack of prog metal support in the crowd. I was digging their entire show, especially old stuff like Chameleon Carnival, The Words Unspoken, and In the Deepest of Waters. The crowd seemed bored though which detracted from their overall impact. Not sure why everyone hates on such a proggy band when you're at an event called PROGPower but whatever. Seems like the fact that they resemble Dream Theater turns people around here off even though both Andromeda and DT are top-notch bands in my opinion. Everyone for the most part seems to like Circus Maximus, and early Dream Theater and early Andromeda are almost identical to Isolate. Jordan Rudess turned DT into a wank band I'll agree, but they're still good nowadays. Anyways, back on topic, Andromeda was excellent but guitar was far too quiet and amp problem was lame.
2. Riverside - Love them, but they're a studio band. Very enjoyable but their weaker long songs (not saying all of their long songs are weak, mind you) seemed to last forever and not in a good way. Had some very powerful moments but I'll take them on CD over live any day.
3. Amorphis - Good songs for the most part, but too much growl. Growl was only decent. Singer's got nothing on Michael Akerfeldt. Clean vocals were very good in my opinion and the songs were overall better when he used clean vocals.
4. Elvenking - Violin was pretty cool, but I'll take Kansas over them any day. Enjoyable definitely.
5. Iron Savior - Sounded like straight up fast hard rock. Every song meshed together. Bored me to tears. Made me think of what Iced Earth would be like if they were bad.

I only watched Amorphis and Riverside on Friday. Both were excellent for different reasons. Since comparing apples to oranges seems like such a fruitless endeavor ( -> I crack myself up), I'll pass on ranking them.

I caught a few minutes of Andromeda. Not my cup of tea. I would have liked to have checked out Pathosray, but my blood-alcohol level was dangerously low, so we had to visit the bar.

I'd have to say that in my book, they were all excellent. Elvenking was energetic, Andromeda was tight and just jaw dropping in their playing, Pathosray was really energetic, AND they were tight and jaw dropping. Iron Savior was fucking amazing (from the front and center), Amorphis played the songs I wanted to hear from Elegy and Tuonela, and Riverside put together a great musical soundscape. It may have been the best overall day of music of any Prog Power.

Then you must have missed the first night of Prog Power 4. Or the second night for that matter.

1. Pathosray--These guys were better than I expected them to be. What a way to open a show!
2. Andromeda--Well worth the seven year wait for me. I just wish the audience wasn't so lame for them.
3. Iron Savior--Though Piet wasn't spot-on with his vocals, the band delivered a hard and heavy set.

I'm not a fan of Amorphis or Elvenking, so I skipped both. I watched the first four songs of Riverside's set, hoping to like them. I even prepared myself before the show by picking up "Rapid Eye Movement" and giving it a spin. Unfortunately, I just can't dig them. The music is there, but the vocals are too Maynard James Keenan-ish for my tastes.

Stay metal. Never rust.

There were a few of us on the floor for Iron Savior that tried our best to help keep Piet on the straight & narrow during their set. COME ON, PIET!
