I thought the messageboard needed liviening up a bit with a bit more discussion on our beloved Saxon, so i thought id start a bit of a series, going through all the albums with posters on here naming there favourite song (one only, i know its unfair but lets keep it simple) and why on each album.

Ill start the ball rolling on the first album, Saxon(1979)

(btw please just post about the first one, ill create another topic for the other albums as time goes on)

Many years ago now my cousin gave me his heavy metal record collection for my 10th birthday (what a guy!!), in it amongst Deep purple, Motorhead, Priest etc, were all the Saxon albums to that point, the first one really stuck in my mind, it was the striking album artwork, this made me want to play it first, so, on my dads old radiogram/sideboard (anyone old enough to remember them?) I stuck it on, and im not ashamed to admit it now but I hated it and turned it off after side one. Some time later my older cousin who gave me the records came round and wanted to know what I thought of them, and to my eternal shame I replied 'Crap', to this he said that I'd obviously not listened enough so proceeded to give me a crtash course in Heavy Metal, im so glad he did because he stuck that first album on again, but this time on side 2, so i sat there bored and irratible, moaning at him to turn it off when i heard a military drum roll, some fine guitar work, my curiosity was piqued. The song went on until the closing guitar solos (which have got to rate as some of the best stuff Quinny (and it was Quinny, Oly has since said) has ever done, if not any guitarist has ever done for melody) and from that I got him to play side one again, I now was enjoying it, before too long we had gone through successive albums and were working through Motorheads earlier work, but thats a different story!

My pick of the bunch is the one that got me into HM, the awe inspiring, jaw dropping:OMG: , fantastic MILITIA GUARD.

So come on guys, lets hear YOUR storys regarding Saxons first outing, I know theres some of you on here older than I and can remember it on first release, some of you might only just have aquired it, but come on, lets hear your thoughts!

I used to buy lot's of albums (and some picture disks) from small second hand record shops in York, Leeds, and Otley. In 1990 i bought two early Saxon albums (strong arm of the law and saxon) and i got hooked on the stuff, So i eventually bought all Saxons albums on C.D. Sadly, most of the second hand music shops i used to go to have closed down. Anyway, back to the point, so what's my favourite track on the album Saxon. . ? "Stallions Of the Highway" :hotjump:

For myself, the first time I ever saw the album (Saxon) 'whew' album (vinyl) giving away the age again, anyway thought the cover was really cool and said I'll give it a go, popped it on the old turntable <-theres another ancient term you don't hear anymore.

Heard the opening chords to Rainbow theme and was hooked it just seemed to get better with each consecutive listen, can't say there isn't really any track that I don't like but for favorites, I'd say that Rainbow theme, Frozen Rainbow, Judgement Day are it for me on this album

I can't remember when or where I bought "Saxon". But now I've got him on cd and 2*vinyl.
The first Saxon material I ever heard was Strong Arm back in 1980someting (late 80's)
on a cassette from my uncle. The first Album I bougt was Rock the Nations.

Mij favorite song on Saxon is: Militia Guard

Got the first Saxon album in about 82.12" of beutiful black plastic( ).I was already a young metalhead thanks to my friends older brother and a mate of mt dads who told to start listening to the Fridat Rock Show.I have gotta admit it sounded a bit old compered to bands lke Maiden,TOPT and I already had wheels of steel and strong arm of the law.So it hardly ever got played until a few years later a got a compilation called strong arm metal. It had an awesome version of Stallions Of the Highway on it.So I dug it out and did'nt stop playing it for weeks.Big teaser just pips it for me.

Great thread Macc!

I think the first album is really underrated. I suppose listening to it now, it sounds a bit 'outdated', but that doesn't take away what a great album it is. Like most people, I discovered 'Wheels of Steel' before 'Saxon', with it being 'WoS' that saw Saxon breaking through.

How on earth do you choose a favourite track off the album though?! Because every one is a belter! Judgement Day, Rainbow theme/Frozen Rainbow, Militia Gaurd, Still fit to Boogie, they are all great tracks. But if I had to choose one favourite track, then it would have to be 'Backs to the Wall'. And what a great surprise to hear that song live after all these years, a year or so back!

Good selection of tracks.just goes to show what a great album it is.After reading the fred I taped and played it on the to work . 530 in the morning and rocking out to those tunz was great.

As a younger Saxon fan (22), I got Wheels of Steel/SAOTL double-pack early on and then pretty much worked my way backwards from Killing Ground. So, this was one of the last ones I bought and to be honest when I first gave it a listen I didn't much like it.

A few months later, I was getting ready to go down to London for the Astoria gig (just over a year ago). I always prefer live music if I already know the songs, so I was listening to all of Saxon's albums again to refresh the memory, especially the ones I didn't usually listen to all that much, and gave the first album a few more spins.

Eventually it did grow on me, and I was very happy when they decided to play a song from this album at the (bloody brilliant) gig. Still Fit to Boogie if memory serves.

A lot of the songs on here are obviously much more mellow and relaxed than what we're used to from Saxon, and I have to say I generally play it when I'm in the mood for winding down in the evening -- along with, say, Threshold's Wireless acoustic album and a few others.

It's definitely not a mosher -- only Stallions of the Highway and maybe Big Teaser would fit on Wheels of Steel, but its got it own kind of charm. Listening to it just now after reading this thread I really thought it was very good.

As for my favourite, I'm surprising myself a bit even but I'm going to go for the Rainbow Theme / Frozen Rainbow combo at the start. Really like the guitar when the Frozen Rainbow track first kicks in.

Anyway, that's my two-penneth.

Just out of interest, has anyone wacked the volume up at the end of Militia guard just to hear those last few notes of the solo? (how sad am I??)

Im glad its not just me then! Anyway, if nothing else its got a few of us playing the old beast again and appreciating just how good it is.

Time for round two methinks, but I'll start a new thread for that one because it could go on for some time! Talking 'bout my Wheels of Steel!!
