what's the funniest/dumbest thing you have ever read on the net about metal written by a serious metal fan???

here's 2

"wank - core" - some DM fan talking about bands like martyr and necrophagist
"emocore/metalcore" - some clueless idiot talking about mastodon

I can understand why someone would say that. Clearly he doesn't like overly technical playing (Sometimes at the expense of songwritng in tech. death)and is playing on the trend of assigning -core to the end of genres. I wouldn't say he's being especially dumb or funny.

I hate the appendage -core. I have despised it since the awful magazine Rip used it in the late 80's, and it's one of the worst aspects of Terrorizer magazine. Everything is either "post-" or "-core", and sometimes both. Just add "Math" or "Noise" into the mix, and chances are you'll have an article featuring a band where every single member looks like a fucking "ironic" 18 year old who needs their head smashed in with a fucking HAMMER.

*Gasps*

So yeah, I don't like those terms much.

Calling Mastodon metalcore is acceptable, considering they are sludge which is so obviously a combonation of doom and hardcore.

why define something by its most mainstream incarnation?

when people do that with metal as a whole, every real metalhead goes crazy over it

Mastodon is not "sludge." They're more like progressive metalcore with a heavy rock leaning now...

 Mastodon always throw up controversy when being classified. Personally I would say they are Sludge/metalcore with slight progressive and hard rock elements. I think it's impossible to define them under one genre.

I thought this was rather funny. I read a review explaining that Michael Amott left Carcass after Heartwork, citing the music as getting "too melodic" for him. He then went on to form Arch Enemy...

mastodon sounds nothing like modern/mainstream metalcore

That matters not. Overcast hardly sounds like modern metalcore, and they were the creators (or one of them anyways) of metalcore.

Oktober Skyline hardly sound like any mainstream metalcore, yet they are undeniably metalcore.

Not really. I think of sludge as rather "sloppy", disorganised and heavily distorted doom.

The fact that early Crowbar had some HC influences, doesn't mean that all sludge bands are HC influenced. Not trying to flame, just my opinion :kickass:

I agree and Mastodon discussion ends now!

You're on the right track, my friend...sludge is mainly based around feedback and heaviness, essentially. "Sloppy" also works as a good descriptive term for it. It's not always doomy, but yeah, generally that's a fine definition.
