You're on the right track, my friend...sludge is mainly based around feedback and heaviness, essentially. "Sloppy" also works as a good descriptive term for it. It's not always doomy, but yeah, generally that's a fine definition.

A case in point would be Iron Monkey - very doomy, but far too flung from the Sabbathian vibe to be a fully fledged doom act. They seem, to me, to be sludge, and yet (despite their band members having been in HC acts) they have few, if any HC influences.

Not really. I think of sludge as rather "sloppy", disorganised and heavily distorted doom.

The fact that early Crowbar had some HC influences, doesn't mean that all sludge bands are HC influenced. Not trying to flame, just my opinion :kickass:

The majority of sludge I know, actually probably all sludge I know, has hardcore influence.

Acid Bath, Callisto, Cult of Luna, Fleshpress, Intronaut, Isis, Lair of the Minotaur, Mare, Old Man Gloom, Overmars, Snowblood, The Ocean, etc all have some hardcore aspect to them.

That's modern post-hardcore sludge. We're talking gritty, dirty, downtuned, angry, evil sludge. Not this pretentious modern crap (but I do like plenty of it :p).

It wasn't a good thread from the beginning and I was going to clsoe it but I'd have all these people up my ass because they wanted to be off topic in here and prove my point that most people complaining are people who don't come primarily for, you know, metal discussion.

:)

I believe Lair of the Minotaur fits that :D but yeah, I get what you're talking about. I guess.

Modern and pretentious > old and evil :p
