You people worry too much about definitions.

In my mind, black metal have always been fundementally been about satanism, but as the community thinned, the definition expanded. Immortal tried to get away with calling themselves 'holocaust metal', but quickly gave it up and admitted to being a black metal band. And that was perhaps one of the first steps in expanding the genre.

Today, limiting black metal to satanism is only one way to interpret the genre. Although it's not wrong, it's not the only correct answer. Saying that Burzum is black metal, is not wrong. Saying that Enslaved is black metal, is not wrong.

As for black metal image being a joke, the only band that I know of that took it with a smile, was no one else than Immortal themselves.

And as for the ideology being a joke, that's just plain wrong. And I know that for a fact.
