the one on the left seems to have some modesty issues.

Thing is, isn't it MEANT to have some sense of humour associated with it?

For example, back in the day, you look at people like Alice Cooper -> KISS -> King Diamond -> eventually black metal bands

I mean, nobody really laughed at Alice Cooper, KISS, or King Diamond because it was always meant to be a bit camp: theatrical, pretending to be a little scary, old horror movie themes, etc.

Shouldn't we look at the image of Black Metal in the same way?

Their fans didnt laugh at them, but everyone else did. But there is a bigger difference that you already alluded to, they were purposely camp. I dont know how purposely camp any black metal band is except for Cradle of Filth. Cmon man, get out in the fucking world, alot of people dont like metal, and find it ridiculous and for good reason (see any black metal band). But still the corpse paint and theatrics serve an interesting purpose, and do provide for entertainment.

Yeah I thought most black metal bands took the image pretty serious. That's why even if I don't like Cradle of Filth much anymore, at least they have a good sense of humoUr to it. It's okay to have fun with music. :)

So just what is up with corpse paint and outfits anyway? Is it camp? Is it a gimmick to seperate black metal from other forms of metal? Is it serious? A ploy to pick up men or women?- its hard to tell. Someone please explain? It makes sense-like Mr Keeley states- as a continuation of King Diamond, Kiss etc, but it doesnt make sense that these guys take it so damn seriously, and refuse to get the joke.

It's more of a dissassociation of the people from the music itself, which really matters in the first place. Do a search on it somehow and you will find much information about it besides the one reason I just stated which I believe to be the major point, or original point anyway which got severely out of hand.

But with Immortal, it is SO over the top, you have to give them the benefit of the doubt with them being self-depricating.

Look, the man on the left is wearing a witch hat and cape for crissakes! Have you ever seen anything like that elsewhere in BM circles?

Also, the naked guys - is that real or a piss take?

The image fits the music.

Though, someday, I'd like to see a Black Metal band that looked like Poison. Now that's going against the grain!

Exactly. speed is a complete fucking idiot, though, and trying to explain something like this to him is pretty futile I reckon.

It's not ENTERTAINMENT, it is a symbol of INHUMANITY, a way to emphasise that the music and message is wholly separate from the humans behind it. Fuck off Covenant, Cradle of Filth, Dödheimsgay and all other faggot bands who've made it a gimmick. Or to quote myself from a forthcoming Nasheim interview:

Erik: When I said "inhuman," I meant that the humans behind the music are _irrelevant_ to music such as ours. We wouldn't want people to focus on us, we want them to focus on the music, the atmosphere we attempt to create, and the message, or ideology, brought forth by the lyrics. Place too much emphasis on the people creating the music and you get dangerously close to the realms of "rock stars" and "pop idol" worship. Fuck that, focus on what's important. It's not a coincidence that so many of the early, influential bands in ideologically based extreme music used corpse paint, or exceedingly obscure black and white photographs, or no band photos or even lineup information at all (BURZUM, BATHORY.) Then, of course, came the imitators, the people who couldn't see through the superficial and thought "black metal" was about looking like fucking clowns and posing with medieval axes. Great work, you've reduced something pure, real and ideologically deep into fucking KISS with blastbeats.

Well there's an obvious problem that painting your face in a striking manner will attract even more attention to the artist instead of the music. If an artist wants the music to speak for him (which he should imo) he should simply avoid photograhps as much as possible.

First fuck you too Erik for being the fuck you always are. Thank you spaffe, Just how do you disassociate the music by wearing over the top spiky gothic garb under corpse paint? I suppose looking like a freak, is a way to distance oneself from society, but it still is a desperate cry for needing to fit in with a like-minded group. And why should there be any image at all? Why not just put pictures of the dark woods or something? Why not just wear normal black clothes, or act like a jazz band etc? The hypocrisy is obvious. Instead of hate, nature, and the seperation from society, they have decided to tak the route of a child; dress up to get attention, act like a spoilt child, and cloak it in the idea that they are against society. Cmon, these guys just thought it would be cool to dress up like a meaner Kiss.

Im sure Doomcifer is right, this is probably why it started, so I am not saying Erik you are fucking wrong or anything fuckoff. But these immature teenagers that started the whole corpse paint movement were not very bright now were they? Oh and I love those thinking skills of yours Erik, if you dont believe me, you are wrong. Haha, and the fact you never reconsider things that you think are right- classic. You'd make a good American patriotic solider, sent off to die for their slavery to ideas they can neither understand, nor will question.

Spaffe: NRK is the Norwegian equivalent of BBC.

Still funny that people scoff at my thought that black metal is extremely pretentious. I understand the disassociation between the person and the music, but there are so many little rules and boundaries that it just becomes ridiculous. Then people say it's not ABOUT the music, but rather the ideology. Okay, another rule that just slightly contradicts the "music is what counts, not what motivates it" rule, unless I'm assuming too much. I'm all for a society with rules and regulations, but fuck off the law-ridden art form.

Also, just thought of this and I may be relegated to speed-like status for saying it, but take Ulver - Nattens Madrigal. Did anyone ever consider that it was a commentary concerning the ridiculous nature of authentic black metal?
