I have been pondering this a lot lately as I have been listening to a lot of underground death/doom/black and newer heavy metal bands like In Solitude and Portrait. When you guys get to the mixing stage, do you go for the cleanest most clinical inhuman sounding end product or do you go for a "vibe" that is reflected in the music/lyrics/image of a band. I find myself really getting into the more "occult" sounding bands that are drenched in reverb with no drum replacement or re-amping that don't necessarily all play like or have the skill of the likes of Jeff Loomis/Petrucci etc... It seems more refreshing and enjoyable to listen to than stuff that has been quantized to death. What do you all think????
here's an example of what I'm getting at, might not be to everybodies taste but you might understand what I'm trying to get across
