I'm looking at the sm57, e609, i5, D-2 and I'm not sure if one will be enough. Should I go a little further and get a second one so I can use the fredman technique?

well the studio i work at, the studio manager (pro mixer, mastering engineer)
has always used at least three mics up close in differant places as well as an ambiant mic for what ever style of music he has ever recorded.

like i mentioned in another post, doing this will give you a massive chunk of the eq spectrum to play with, and if you dont like parts, just cut them out.

using 1 mic will limit you.. and you cant boost frequencies in a mix that the mic didnt pickup, as one mic wont pickup everything.

so add loads of mic and cut as nesisery.

So I guess I'll start off with two.

Now I have to figure out what mics I want.

:bah:

Well guys, I think I might just get two Sm57's. I really dig the mid bump they have, makes them sit well in the mix. Then in the future I can pick up other mics and see what happens. Cheers!

*Mr fredman stuff*

ah ok, thought it might be something like that, i had an idea a long while ago to mic a cab twice, on axis and off axis and compare the two directly.. looks like i need another sm-57 them

ive read most of the clayman thread but not come across this yet, thats funny :loco:

in addition to dynamics, look at some of the cheap chinese ribbons that are available now also

i have a ribbon on the way from a group buy on another forum...same as the nady rsm-2, but with a thinner ribbon element. i'll be tracking some guitars with it whenever it shows up(2-3 weeks?), and will post some clips whenever it's ready

i have a feeling that the smooth ribbon tone, combined with an sm57 or i5, will absolutely kill

Cool, I haven't looked into Ribbons but I'll def check it out and see what I think.

i suggest you place it in the mic cupboard or ebay.

ROYER 121's are nice blended with 57s on guitars, and amazing overheads, room mics, snare mics (if you're brave) and on .. well anything the cheapies like th tbone ones etc mic nice room mics, coz theyre quite dark but not much other than that.
ill post some examples for ya.

having said, i recall you (andy) had a chat/sample from royer and werent that interested
