"Ghost" and "Storm's A-Coming" by Matt Smith

Beautifull song. Hope you keep making more beautiful songs....
Theocracy makes me wanna sing...(not Stryper anymore....just joking michael....)

Here's by best try at deciphering the lyrics. Not sure about all of it, but I think I got most of them! Any corrections are welcome. The bridges in this song (combined with many of the lyrics in Wynter Fever) show that Matt is, indeed, the master of the limerick. :)

Ghost
music & lyrics: Matt Smith

Wake of a whisper, thirteen years, unspoken past
Silhouettes at the table, in the candle, shadow cast
The muse and the mystery lost in me though still remain
A specter of tragedy ever lingers like a stain

And regret is the rule of the day
All the things they've forgotten to say
So they chose not to start as they drifted apart
While the innocence melted away

And it's a long way down when the promise is already gone
All the dreams we founded have faded with time, and it's time to move on
Here surrounded, too proud to give up but too tired to carry you home
What a way to be free

Shell of a memory from an artificial life
Matchsticks and ashes, only figures marking time
He just stares at the window, the scars of vacant eyes
Gripped by the haunting and the loss he kept inside

So she carries the weight of the world
And she buries the dreams of a girl
And she wonders if time will be aging like wine
Or the pain that created the pearl

Cause it's a long way down when the promise is already gone
All the dreams we founded have faded with time, and it's time to move on
Here surrounded, too proud to give up but too tired to carry you home
Run away to be free

Very close...copied & pasted with corrections:

Ghost

Wake of a whisper, thirteen years unspoken passed
Silhouettes at the table, in the candle's shadow cast
The muse and the mystery lost and neither still remain
The spectre of tragedy ever lingers like a stain

And regret is the rule of the day
All the things they'd forgotten to say
So they chose not to start as they drifted apart
While the innocence melted away

And it's a long way down when the promise is already gone
All the dreams we found then have faded with time, and it's time to move on
Here surrounded, too proud to give up but too tired to carry you home
What a way to be free

Shell of a memory from an artificial life
Matchsticks and ashes, only figures marking time
He just stares out the window, scars and vacant eyes
Gripped by the haunting and the loss he kept inside

So she carries the weight of the world
And she buries the dreams of a girl
And she wonders if time will be aging like wine
Or the pain that created the pearl

'Cause it's a long way down when the promise is already gone
All the dreams we found then have faded with time, and it's time to move on
Here surrounded, too proud to give up but too tired to carry you home
Run away to be free

Thanks, Matt! We now have the official word. :) I have this song on repeat. I notice in the youtube description you call it "one of the demos" so I hope the rest of the demos see the light of day in some capacity in the future!

The song is beautiful but at the same time very sad. These sort of songs/lyrics (other examples: Mark Schultz - Do You Even Know Me Anymore and Casting Crowns - American Dream) speak to me though as they are a warning and reminder to not let it come so far.
So yesterday shortly after hearing this song again I left my computer, that I sometimes get stuck behind, to spend time with my wonderful wife instead - a good decision!

Matt, your ability to write lyrics that speak to people and of course write great music is a gift from above. Great to see (hear) that you are using it to God's glory!

What's to get?

Do you need someone to post the lyrics?

Nah man, but thanks those of you that did. But is the song about a couple where someone screwed up so there leaving eachother is it. About a man and a woman at all? Or is it about a woman who's lover died? Or is it something completely differant?

I don't think it matters who exactly the song is about. The poignancy of the relationship is so strong it communicates different things to different people. I feel a personal connection to the narrative which makes the melody and poetry even more powerful and enjoyable for me.

That's the joy of music: When it touches you - WOW!!

The song blows me away every time I'm listening to it. Matt, once again you did an incredible good job!
Are you going to do a full length acoustic album some time? Would be awesome!

I just realized Matt's using a 12 string for this. I guess I just never watched the video before.

It's songs like this that prove why Matt is my favourite singer/songwriter of all. I've not heard a secular album to be as good and consistent as either MOS or ATWB. This song just goes to show he's a truly talented guy.

Here's a little video I made for a demo of another song that's not really suited for Theocracy, but that I thought some people might enjoy. I had a good time going all-out with the vocal arrangement, horns and swing feel on this track--fun little tune. Enjoy!

I'm sold. Matt, make a solo album.

Man, how does Matt write songs that stick in my head with just a listen or two? Maybe it's because I like a bit of quirkiness in music (I like bands like Pain of Salvation), but if these two songs showed up on the next Theocracy album, I'd probably just think, "Cool." But I certainly get that releasing it as a solo album would probably be more prudent.

Probably should have just changed the title to something like "Matt's Solo Project" or something because I'm sure there will be more coming.
