I compared my gibson zakk wylde custom camo to my gibson studio (loaded with an 81) and an esp viper and these latter ones have a lot more gain when using the exact same settings on any amp.

I have the pick up as high as possible on the custom.

I was wondering ; could it be the wood etc or does the zakk wylde emg set have less gain than normal emgs ?

Try to measure distance from bridge (tunamatic) to pickup, if pickup is closer to the bridge, then amplitude of vibration (above the poles) should be less.
Also check distance from pickup to strings.
Would like to hear DIs :)

Thanks for the answer, the studio gib seems to have the pup closer to the bridge by 3mms compared to the custom and definitely closer to the strings.

I will try to set the pups in the custom higher (I reckon a mm or so).

I can post DIs as soon as I get a preamp... which is delayed by my finances

totally normal, the wood and construction has a massive influence on the overall output.
my Gibson V and Washburn Dime3 for example have much less gain than the MII and KV2.
It's just part of the character of the guitar

Makes total sense Lasse, thanks for clearing this up for me.
I absolutely love the tone of this axe but I was worried the emg
set they put on them was different.
