Gibson Guitars (Explorer & Les Paul Studio)

GET THE FUCKING EXPLORER FADED NOW!

I want one myself, I'm in love with Explorers. I have played the faded one at the local GC at least 5,000 times and it never gets old. I may buy it some day since it's like $800 now.

Well, I've wanted an Explorer for ages to be honest! Unfortunetaly it's been 6-7 years since I played one for the last time. All I remember is that it played great though, so... ;)

What does the Faded Finish do to the neck? Is it sticky or anything? (I didn't like the feel of the mate finish of the Gothic series.)

Have you got any ideas, why the dropped prices so drastically? I mean Explorers used to be twice that price! (And the Black and White ones still are a little more expensive, the White being the most expensive for some reason.)

Also I haven't been able to find the Explorer Faded on the Gibson website so far...

+111111111 i got the faded v the explorer kicks ass too:rock:

The Faded Explorer is so cheap NOW because 1) it's been around for quite a while and 2) I think they are trying to liquidate them. When I first saw the one at the GC here it was like $1,200, then a few months later it was $999, then a few months later $850 and the tag said "BLOWOUT!", now it's at $799 with a "MUST GO!" tag. I have played it sooooo many times, it's a fucking riff machine man. The neck is just like the body, basically a satin finish, or really just like a stained neck...just like the body. The Faded Explorer is just a basic, bare-bones model, that's all. You won't find info on the Gibson website, when I checked a few months ago they didn't have anything. Like I said, I think most places are trying to just get rid of them, if you wait a while longer I bet they will lower the price *again*...and after a while they will probably just drop it down really far just to get rid of them.

The faded Gibsons are allways cheaper than other finishes, they are kinda "cheapo-gibsons". I have a Flying V faded myself and it's one of the best guitar I've played, faded finish feels very good, not sticky at all

Hey guys, thank you very much for the responses so far!

Anyone got something to add?
I'd love to hear some thoughts on the Les Paul and especially the build-quality of current Gibson models as well.

LP Studio isn't worth the money...
A friend has one, it's several years old, and the paint already started wearing off to the point the wood shows through at places and it isn't used THAT much. The original pickups have been swapped by a pair of DiMarzios cause they squealed like pigs at slaughter - totally unusable. And the tuners don't hold as tight as they should IMO...

I say go for Explorer Faded! It has the same pickups as my Faded V which is one of the best guitars I've played - very comfortable to play, great and aggressive pickups and I really like the neck profile and the matte finish, the fretting hand really slides very easily over that one...

Ya I'll have to throw in my 2 cents with everyone else... go for the explorer! The cheaper Gibson Les Pauls are only OK. I have a buddy that has one and I compare it to my Epiphone model and there not that much different to be honest :/ Now if you were going for a Gibson Les Paul Custom then I might take that! Explorer FTW man.

See, and that what worries me. I'm kinda afraid, that what you said also applies to cheaper Explorers...

Or am I making up a conspiracy here for no reason?? :goggly:

Well explorers in general are among the cheaper Gibsons but that doesn't mean they suck. I have one on layaway right now (84 Reissue) and have played a few others at guitar center and I don't notice that much of a difference to be honest.

I don't know about the explorers but from what I've read the faded les pauls and SGs have a reputation of being subpar even by the standards of cheaper gibsons. I really like the looks but I've tested one of the SGs and found it to be quite a bit more buzzy and noisy and thinner sounding than my old SG Gothic. I wouldn't be surprised if these were made of cheaper woods and incorporated cheaper electronics. The explorer and V might be better haven't checked these out.

The Explorer must be the odd one of the bunch then......I really fucking want the one I have played a zillion times at GC. It sounds incredible, plays incredible...the fretwork is fine, the finish is fine, everything is great/fine on it, nothing wrong with it at all. The pickups are even great. I have played it through a 6505, 6505+, a few Line6 amps, Marshall JVM, JCMs and one JTM they had, a XXX and the 5150III. Sounds fucking awesome on all of them. In fact, if I wasn't buying Bloodjinn's HellRaiser I would keep that cash, wait until next payday and then go get it...

FUCK Gibson, go ESP (LTD)!

FAIL !

i've had an esp Horizon here, while it looked really nice, it sounded very dead and pale vs my Gibsons.

ltd's are ok guitars too, but nothing really exciting. give me a good les paul or explorer anytime above those

Yeah, I'm an ESP & LTD fan fo sho, but when it comes to the Explorer, Gibson-only IMO.

Yeah definite fail on the LTD over Gibson debate Marcus, sorry!

Yes, some Gibsons have had quality issues, and yes they are different beasts, BUT nothing feels more solid than my Les Paul standard in my hands. The quality difference is night and day between LTDs.

Not to mention that a Les Paul (with the right pickups) is the heaviest sounding guitar I've had or played!

Just a civil disagreement bro. :-)
