GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 2001

Thrash had its run, just accept it.

I used to listen a lot of thrash until early 90's. Even if my preferences went in other directions, I still was updated with what was released and man, thrash went to the toilet. Around mid 00's there were serious efforts to resurrect it, but thrash never reached the levels that it had on the 80's until very early 90's. Not even close and you know it.

From my perspective, death and black metal have been the most consistently good metal styles since early 90's. Every year there are a decent amount of great death and/or black metal albums. Thrashers can't say the same.

Epic year. Metal going mainstream brought in a lot of great ideas from the wider world of music. A lot of shitty ideas too, but overall it was a real gift to be able to tap that vast mindshare for a while.

Animicide was actually supposed to come out around 1997/98 but the band split up in 1997 right after recording it was finished and its release was delayed until 2001. Voïvod-influenced progressive death metal band from Brazil that somehow manages to be alien and technical but also primitive. I've only heard two tracks from the new Blood Incantation album but I definitely see a connection between the 2 bands, likely unintentional though. Criminally underrated IMO and defying the stereotype of what Brazilian underground metal is/should be still to this day.

They even wrote a song inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I'll need to hear that Mordeth album. I've heard all their demos which I more or less enjoy but never went past those.

9. Nightwish - Wishmaster
I don't know which clown is responsible for tagging this album as a 2001-release. It was definitely released in 2000. I bought my copy in June 2000 and saw Nightwish on tour promoting this album 4 months later.

Looks like I'll have to skip this round. I've got one single album from 2001, which is Madder Mortem's "All Flesh Is Grass".

Yeah it was released in May 2000, and this issue does appear on RateYourMusic. Unfortunately whoever added it to the site initially used the 2001 re-issue as the "primary" issue so it shows as being released in 2001. They cannot fix it on the current version of the website. But if you look at the corrections queue it is flagged to be fixed in RYM 2.0 / Sonemic.

Oops. Fixed my list.

After re-listening to the Thorns album I decided it was mandatory to include it in my list.

@Einherjar86 any chance you have a list for 2001? Some great power metal albums from Lost Horizon, Domine, Twisted Tower Dire, Freedom Call, Rhapsody, Adagio, Dark Moor etc.

Oh shit, thanks for tagging me! There's actually a lot I dig from this year, although a lot of the power metal comes second to black/folk metal releases. Subject to change, but for now this is my order:

6. Kamelot - Karma
7. Falconer - s/t
8. Freedom Call - Crystal Empire
9. Human Fortress - Lord of Earth and Heaven's Heir
10. Therion - Secret of the Runes

Still looking through the lists, so I might switch a few; but if not, I think this stands.

1. Megadeth - The World Needs a Hero
2. Northwinds - Masters of Magic
3. 3D House of Beef - Low Cycle
