Cheers, I will check some of those yearly threads out in detail at some point. There is likely to be a lot of post-2000 stuff that I have brushed over. I'm probably in the same boat as a lot of people in that the 2000s are pretty disjointed and there is a certain amount of digging that is required. We have done quite a few other 2000s years and they’ve all been much better than this imo. 2009 especially. Looking through the rym list, there’s nothing too exciting in the top 50. Andacht is one of the best things I’ve heard from this year and it’s not amazing or anything.
I haven’t heard that particular Abigor album, but I also haven’t liked anything they’ve released post Supreme Immortal Art. Maybe I’ll give it a listen.
I’ve heard an Eldrig album or two and they didn’t compare to the first two Fanisk. Seemed completely overblown in a way the latter isn’t. But I’m up for giving them another shot, because I love that style of black metal when it’s done well.
The Abigor album is fairly mechanical / industrial / dissonant sounding compared to their earlier stuff. It follows the "post-modern" Black Metal mode trend of that time period (ie. lots of dissonance and to an extent anti-structure). Although the Abigor album at least keeps some of their trademark "symphonic" approach.
Both of those Eldrig albums are different but they are also different to a lot of "trends" in BM at the time - Kali has less movement within the structures, it's more traditional in its approach to ambience (ie. use of repitition and subtle changes). It's obviously based on the Hindu goddess, so some familiarity with her may help. Everlasting War Divinity has a lot of progression and movement within the structures (really crudely it would be like comparing something like Emperor to Burzum in that respect only). It is also closer to Fanisk, it that it has some of that cosmic feel.
I wrote about the Furze review under my "Vesupria" username on Rateyourmusic.com. I'm not sure how to link specific reviews, but it's there if you want to have a read.
