nick holmes never meant anything by it, he just made it all up, hes doesnt even know himself what theyre about,

Not quite true as far as I know. He says his lyrics have no real message as a whole. He sort of just writes what he thinks, getting bored with subjects quite quickly and just randomly jumping on to new ones. Always liked fragments of PL lyrics, as..:

"whore, is what the people roar, from fear of rejection you'll come back for more"

"Mocking the meaningless, joys of the empty..."

"Dying slow, I'll blame it all on you"

and on and on.

As for political meessages and so on, TV 2's lyrics are loaded with them. Be it about racism, people's habit of constantly bitching, the idiocy of the battle of sexes, violence, lack of passion for stuff...

thats what he meant, sort of writes randomness and as a whole meaningless, putting strong creative words together fair enough, be 'cool' whatever, but why say excrement when you can say shite 3 times?

good lyrics live off non-directness. you could have a song against war maybe and just load it with "fuck war" phrases all over. but would that be cool? not really. people should think about lyrics, not just absorb them. and if they don't give a shit about messages, they don't need to read them.

So you cut all the tall trees down
You poisoned the earth and the sky
You've taken what's good from the ground
But you left precious little for me

You remember the flood and the fall
We remember the light on the hill
There should be enough for us all
But the dollar is driving us still

River runs red
Black rain falls
Dust in my hand
River runs red
Black rain falls
On my bleeding land

So we came and conquered and found
Riches of commons and kings
Who strangled and wrestled the ground
But they never put back anything

Now I'm trapped like a dog in a cage
Wherever the truth is pursued
It must be the curse of the age
What's taken is never renewed

Midnight Oil - "River Runs Red"

Just one of the many Midnight Oil songs that carry a "thoughtful message"...

The subjects of sleep
Their faces once awake
on sodomy and death
and smoke and laughter
their feet no longer
underground

The snow hides the traces
never set in a first place

This negative kingdom
hey horrible and white
the angels all stone
passing their years
hoping to be saved
from oblivion
...by oblivion

And the miracle is that
nothing has happened
nothing has a history
or a name

Only the voice
of falling snow

ah so it has to be 'cool' , right... they dont have to write 20 sentences on it either when it can be said in one

id read some lyrics and if its meaningful ok fine, but who am i to question the artist on whats behind it?, its theirs, its personal, i dont like to prive, take from it what you will and just leave it at that. then you have preach sermons, are these non-direct? put it this way, would you recognise a nirvana song more than, if say someone recited a few words from one of their songs? thats the universal appeal mate, the inspiration it gave to kids to pick up a guitar and strum 3 chords together, 'sound' :) not to take lithium cos it be might be cool

...War all of the time
In the shadow of the New York skyline
We grew up too fast falling apart
Like the ashes of American flags
If the sun doesn't rise
We'll replace it with an H-bomb explosion
A painted jail cell of blood in the sky like Three Mile Island
Nightmares on TV they used to sing us to sleep
They burn on and on like an oil field
Or a memory of what it felt like
To burn on and on and not just fade away
All those nights in the basement the kids are still screaming
On and on and on and on

War all of the time
In the shadow of the New York skyline
We grew up too fast falling apart
Like the ashes of American flags
The pieces fall it’s like a last day parade
And the fires in our streets start to rage,
so wave, to the people that long to wave back,
from the fabric of a flag that sang "love all of the time"...

Thursday - "War All The Time"

honestly i don't really get what you're aiming at, but i don't mean to pry anything from artists, they were free to keep their mouth shut and do instrumentals only. and for lyrics, as for any piece of art, you can't apply any functional standards. a monitor is a monitor and there's no point in making it more ornate or whatever, since it serves its purpose. lyrics however have no defined purpose and so you can't measure them with terms of efficiency and stuff.
having said that, simple song structures can also be very entertaining, and i don't look out only for music where the message appeals to me. think of it as an added bonus, the one thing that keeps good and excellelent songs apart.

form follows function, the function is that of 'communication' so youre wrong there. they dont have to keep their mouth shuts, its when people cling onto it, speculate, idolise and preach

exactly, so what are you on about then? take from it what you will, and leave it at that, let go, its very simple :D

eminem - who knew

You want me to fix up lyrics while the President gets his dicksucked?
Fuck that, take drugs, rape sluts
Make fun of gay clubs, men who wear make-up
Get aware, wake up, get a sense of humor
Quit tryin to censor music, this is for your kid's amusement
But don't blame me when lil' Eric jumps off of the terrace
You shoulda been watchin him - apparently you ain't parents

[...]

So who's bringin the guns in this country?
I couldn't sneak a plastic pellet gun through customs over in London
And last week, I seen a Schwarzenegger movie
where he's shootin all sorts of these motherfuckers with a uzi
I see three little kids, up in the front row,
screamin "Go," with their 17-year-old Uncle
I'm like, "Guidance - ain't they got the same moms and dads
who got mad when I asked if they liked violence?"
And told me that my tape taught 'em to swear
What about the make-up you allow your 12-year-old daughter towear?
So tell me that your son doesn't know any cuss words
when his bus driver's screamin at him, fuckin him up worse
"Go sit the fuck down, you little fuckin prick!"

[...]

How many retards'll listen to me
and run up in the school shootin when they're pissed at a
teacher, her, him, is it you is it them?
"Wasn't me, Slim Shady said to do it again!"
Damn! How much damage can you do with a pen?
Man I'm just as fucked up as you woulda been
if you woulda been, in my shoes, who woulda thought
Slim Shady would be somethin that you woulda bought
that woulda made you get a gun and shoot at a cop
I just said it - I ain't know if you'd do it or not

eminem - role model

Now follow me and do excactly what you see
Dont you wanna grow up to be just like me?
I slap women, and eat shrooms then O.D.
Dont you wanna grow up to be just like me?
I came to a club drunk and with a fake ID
Don't you wanna grow up to be just like me?
I've been with 10 women who got HIV
Now dont you wanna grow up to be just like me?
I got genital warts and it burns when I pee
Now dont you wanna grow up to be just like me!?
I tie a rope around my penis and jump from a tree
You probably wanna grow up the JUST like me!!

thats fucking real, straight up, no cryptic crap

one of worst bands ive come across for lyrics is manic street preachers, its like, "well what will we right about today?" "i know" says nicky wire..."heres a lost poem by sylvia plath" theyd be better off keeping their mouths shut ffs

bloodhound gang - hell yeah

If I were God there would be no explicit sex on T.V.
Like little Opie eating pie when he made it with Aunt Bea

If I were God thou shall not worship false Billy Idols
And thou shall add the Book Of Flavor Flav to the Bible
Thou shall make fun of Hindus thou shall not make a "Speed 2"

[...]

If I were God I'd get a bunch of slaves to do everything
Norwegian lesbians that feed me grapes and know how to sing

If I were God thou shall not wear tube socks with Flip-Flops
Thou shall sit and thou shall spin thou shall even wife swap
Thou shall resist the Olsen Twins, thou shall not cut "Footloose"
