I must encourage any and all of you to try out Ubuntu Studio. It contains all of the necessary software to record, mix and master your music and even burn it to a CD. all you need to do is download it, burn the ISO to a DVD and install it to a computer. then find the hardware that's compatible with it and enjoy a totally free operating system that's made for music.
this OS is totally free so you don't have to shell out hundreds of dollars for it. i use it everyday but not for music. i haven't gotten that far yet. i'm a journalist and i use the packages for graphical design and photography but i'll get my equipment together to make some music and i'll make it happen with this system.
give it a try. you'll be amazed at what you can do with linux.
