This is an interesting thread.

Homophobia is a result of humanity fearing that which is foreign to them and reacting to this fear violently. It's a phobia, an inhibition, and should be eliminated within the individual if he is to grow and develop spiritually and mentally.

That being said, it would seem that a lot of homophobes seek justification for their fear through their limited involvement with a small number of gay people whom they base their stereotypes off of. Everyone is an individual, regardless of his sexual orientation, or the type of music he listens to, for that matter.

The problem with sexuality and society is that it only becomes an issue when it is inquired or spoken about, as opposed to race and gender which are visually obvious. We've been forced to put up with our external differences, so that when we see women and black people exercising certain roles in society, we no longer consider it a big deal. But when we see homosexuals entering into these roles, we either not know about it by assuming they're straight, or we blow it way out of proportion, either because we think they're making a statement or trying to be attention whores.

Think about Dont-Ask-Don't-Tell in the military. The same applies to all of society, in which we feel more comfortable not knowing someone's sexual orientation.
