damnit.....after hearing recorded guitars on albums like

It Dies Today
Bleed the Sky
Sevendust (seasons)
Unearth
Kill Switch
Caliban
Disturbed (new album)

just wondering what the hell everyone is recording with as far as mics ?

md421 ?
e609 ?
sm57 ?
radio shack ?

what's the deal the great studios are using ?

Besides, this topic has never REALLY been covered... the only real topics have been the SM57 vs the i5... NONE of the other mics have really been discussed.

FWIW, Meshuggah has used a Neumann TLM193 on a few of their records.. but that's WAY more $$$ than the simple dynamics listed above... so, discuss that.

Yea....I never really liked mushuggah's sound......It always sounded like the guitars where recorded in a 55 gal. drum.

I know alot of plp prefer the md421. I just wonder if that is what alot of these bands (that I listed) are using ?

And if so, are they drastically changing the E.Q. curve in the computer later?

Meshuggah to me always sounded like they're playing tanks with strings. very metallic heavy clear... pretty cool but not for me.

Anyway more on topic, I think alot of the sound comes from things besides the mic. I thought the new disturbed sound was a little weak personally but whatever.

I hear Two Shure SM-57's were used on DHIADW and that's a lovely guitar tone right there. (I might not be right about this though)

i can't tell whether you are asking a very subjective question: "which mic does everyone THINK is the best for metal?" or whether you just want to know the historical answer to, "what mic has been used most to achieve the best guitar tones on all the best sounding metal albums over the years?". the latter could arguably be the ubiquitous sm57.

Just curious, what do you personally think is the best?

This is a long shot, but here's a pic of Carnal Forge recording please..die at Studio Underground..

What type of mics might those be? TLM103 look kinda like that, but I guess many do ...heh

I'm constantly baffled how professionals get this, yet so many hobbyists like myself (but, myself excluded) will argue to the death that the 57 is a piece of junk. I absolutely love that mic, and while I like multi (usually 2) mic recording, the 57 is a fantastic, and incredibly affordable, proven to be effective solution.

No such as "best mic" really. Different combinations will give you different results. I'm talking about: Guitar, amp, cab, microphone, microphone pre-amp, A/D converters etc.

The 57 does a really good job for a lot of things and is very cheap - extremely durable. Not the kind of mic I would use for a Gretch guitar through a Vox AC30.

The Royer R-121 ribbon microphone is excellent for guitar cabs. Particularly the 48V version which saves all the impedance matching business and has higher gain.

I Recommend you to try one the royer.

I have to disagree on the Royer, I really gave it a good shot but the good ol 57 never left the room.

What pre did you use with it? I really like the sound of the Royer when I use it with the Avalon preamp, but with the Neve it sounds flat and lifeless.

Check out Division's track "Paradise Lost", on their mysapce page. I did the recording and the guitars are Royer 122 with the Avalon 2022 preamp. The other tracks on their myspace page I did with a 57 and a 421 through a Neve pre: http://www.myspace.com/divisionusa

I had a Royer for awhile but sold it. I liked the smoothness but it was so dark I always had to EQ it quite a bit. Finally I realized there's no point in keeping a $1K mic around that I constantly have to EQ to sound more like an $89 mic. ;)

In all fairness though, I'm sure my room had a lot to do with it since the
Royer is figure-8. Those of us with less-than-perfect spaces benefit more from the rejection of a 57-type mic...at least in my experience. I used it with a Great River MP-2NV.

Too bad I didnt read this thread before i went to visit Pelle this weekend when we gigged i västerås. However, it seems tyo be the same setup there as I used when we recorded The Arrival up there.

As I remember it it's an ancient Sennheiser microphone and he's got a couple of them for guitar and bass tracking.
Could be wrong though since it's been a couple of years since i was there.

He's rescently started using 5150's along with his Savage btw... We're talking killer guitartone there!
