Greatest Metal Guitar Mic on the planet !

i'm not sure to be honest with you, one side is silver and the other side is black...it is a pretty bright sounding mic, but i like that about it...placed off-axis a bit, it has a nice clear "in your face" sound and a good natural low end

here's a short recording i did recently using the 609 slightly off-axis (right channel) and sm57 a bit more off-axis(left channel)

thats the e609 silver model. and yes it is bright. the e609(all black model) is so much better. still really in your face sounding, but even more so because the bottom end with it is more present, in a good way, so its even fuller sounding. i scored a black 609 off ebay brand new for 110.00 which is the silver price. if you look you can find great deals on them.

are there only two 609 models

609 - black - that I guess is all Black

and

609S - Silver - that is half Silver and Black

i too love the i5(have three) but sometimes i really do prefer the black 609, and then sometimes i prefer a 57 lol. seriously, i would hate to be without any of them. its fun tryin them all on lots of different setups. its all about options, the more the better.

Anybody ever use an ElectroVoice RE20 for micing guitars? Are you noticing a large amount of signal strength around 660Hz? Or could this be caused some other way? I've had the mic about 1/2" away from the grill cloth pointed mid way between the edge of the speaker and the center. The amp is a Line 6 Spider IV with 4X12 cab. The guitarist is using a an ESP Les Paul knock-off with an EMG 81/85 combo.

I've never thought of using that for guitar...I've used it on a kick drum and for announcers/speakers.

It's the most commonly used mic in radio studios...it just didn't ever cross my mind to use it for guitar for that reason.
I actually work at a radio station and we had a box of extras so the engineer gave me one. (Nice!) Anyway, I read online in a couple of places where people swear by them for guitar. I'm not impressed with the results for metal. Might be good for a southern rock twang.

When the mic your using is more expensive than the head, you're doing it wrong.
A) It's not my amp.
B) I don't know what kind of gear budget you have, but my friend can't afford a $1,500 head. So we have to work with what we can afford.

Really? Is it that bad? I don't know that I have faith in that. I haven't heard an amp sim that sounds as good as the Spider does, so it would seem finding the right mic and micing techniques would be better than an amp sim. I'm gonna sell the RE20 and get an SM57.

Old thread is old. An re20 is not uncommon on guitars some big time producers use them for guitars, although they are rarely used alone and not really used for metal. Sell the re20 and buy podfarm and a GOOD DI box (this is key to good amp sim tones and new strings) i always think of amp sims sounding as good as the guitar its self does if you have a shity cheap guitar with muddy bland pickups and old strings its going to sound like crap. Here are a few bands thats tones are amp sims also just search the "Rate my tone" section i bet you can find stuff there of decent amp sim tones.

AXEFX

Podfarm 2

hope this helps dude!!!

now die thread die.

You should sell it to me for $100. That should be enough for an SM57, haha.

BTW, have you gone to the rate my mix section? There are some surprisingly great mixes in there that are amp sims. One that always stands out is Behindert and the dude that has a band called "March Hare." Sneap search that.

This combination is my favorite by far, but my tastes tend to change every other month considering that I have lot more to experience:

2 SM57's (1 at the edge of the cap, another 45degrees to the edge of the cap)

1 Royer 121 (12 inches from the cab)

If money isn't an object give the KSM313 a shot. Going side by side with the Royer 121 the Royer seems to be a little too dark to cut through even when it's on axis. The KSM313 doesn't exhibit that same level of roll off so you can get it on axis and still get the forgiving roll off of a ribbon mic, but still have bite without getting too fizzy...and you can blast the hell out of it because the ribbon is metalized mylar and not leaf.
