Greatest Metal Guitar Mic on the planet !

Sorry to warm this thread up.

When I first tried the Royer compared to a 57 I thought what's this muddy bass boom shit? Then I discovered that if you put it around 10-15 cm back from the speaker (which reduces the boomy bass) and use the backside of the mic, it makes it quite cool. It's never as "detailed" as a 57 and does not have the same attack, but it has makes the track really fat and somehow natural, which is good for "wall of sound" things and not so good for fast riffing.

So it's a great, completely different sounding alternative to the 57.

Oh and by the way, I know the i5 is the hot new item around these parts, but I have to say that after a lot of testing I still prefer the 57. I do dig the i5, but sometimes the high end on it can be a bit much with certain amps. Just my (probably unpopular) opinion.

I'm in agreement with you Matt. The i5 is totally cool, but it can get pretty bright, and I'm digging the dual 57 on/off axis thing right now.

I agree about the i5 Matt. From what I've heard, I'd still be using the 57 over it. I would love to hear some more samples of it in different applications though, and hopefully at some time try one myself.

Having said that, I LOVE the sounds that Meshuggah used to pull with the Neumann TLM193. I'd love to get into more experimentation using more expensive mics than just 57s, because I'm getting a bit sick of their sound. They seem to be a very safe option and everyone is using them these days, so I think it's good to change things around a bit.

Tesseract seem to have had some nice success when using a U87 in conjunction with a Powerball. So I'm just gonna try shoving everything in front of a cab and see what comes out my personal favourite.

i just did tests of a VHT Pitbull, Framus Cobra, and a Krank Krankenstein.. all with the same cab, a mesa standard 4x12 w/ v30s, with 3 different mics. an i5, a 57, and an original, all black, e609. with each head the i5 sounded best.. never too bright at all.... actually it was very, very similar to the 57 but with a smoother and more open top end.

I would be curious to hear a pair of i5 mics in an on/off axis config.

Let me rephrase my earlier statement. If I'm doing single mic stuff, I'll probably go with an i5.... but for dual, I'm using 57s... mostly because I don't have two i5's!

The response of the 58 is slightly different. The 57 has a boost after 5k and the 58 has a 'presence boost' (around 2-3k from memory) so you won't be getting the same frequency response from both. If that isn't an issue, then go right ahead.

it really depends on the sound you're going for and what fits the bill...i think the senny 609 is the easiest to get a good metal sound from, it works well with even cheapo preamps, and it's pretty easy to place

the 57 and i5 work great as well, but they (especially the 57) don't sound too good unless you've got a good preamp behind them, and they're more difficult when it comes to placement etc.

the mxl 990 is a good cheap LD condenser

those are the only 3 mics i can really comment on, because i own them...i plan to add an md421 and a few others to the club

That are the curves for sm57 and sm58.
This boost at 3 -4 khz and the lowering at 7 - 8 khz (against the hiss) from the sm58 shows that it's made for vocals I'd say.

I bought an i5 and I think it's great. I'd prefer 57 before 58 (with or without windscreen) on guitar.

Cobra, are you talking about the regular 609 or the 609 silver? I have two of the silver models, and while OK, they're a touch on the bright side.

the all black ones kick fucking ass. i love them. i own a silver as well and don't love that one. i think the black 609 is definetly a worthy mic to have in the arsenal.

Unfortunately, they don't seem to be making the 609 black model anymore. Now there's the e906 with the frequency switches? I'm curious is anyone has tried this out....

I try to record some guitar tracks with a Beyer dinamic opus 59, very nice!
Someone had experience with this??

im curious as well. i will probably pick on up soon to try it out. i pretty much like almost everything ive tried by sennheiser, even the silver 609 is good on some things. i think the 906 will just be another color to add to the choices.

i'm not sure to be honest with you, one side is silver and the other side is black...it is a pretty bright sounding mic, but i like that about it...placed off-axis a bit, it has a nice clear "in your face" sound and a good natural low end

here's a short recording i did recently using the 609 slightly off-axis (right channel) and sm57 a bit more off-axis(left channel)
