Greatest Rock Bands Of All Time?

for starters let me say to me the beatles aren't a rock band. the are an experimental pop band so no one get pissed when i don't list them.

1 the rolling stones
2 the who
3 cream
4 the doors
5 GNR

i think thats pretty close. a few bands like the grateful dead i don't think rocked out enough to fully be called a rock band

Decent list, except for GNR...

...the fuck, they were a fun band, but nowhere near the best rock band.

I think Pink Floyd, Genesis, and The Cure can fit well in that list along with the doors :p

My top three candidates would be:

Pink Floyd
Jethro Tull
Genesis

I know that most people will disagree with this, but that's my two cents.

"rock bands" this is a tuff one, would I pick great progressive bands like Pat did and lower them to the level of "a rock band" or dig back and draw up some bands that delved into hardrock like Matt did ? So no I'll try to stick with just "rock" bands and it will be hard, list will include some with importance rather than career lenght. I will also add that for the most part pure rock was history by the end of the 70's with such diversification and melding with the advent of new wave, metal

in no specific order

1-2&3 - I'll throw the Stones, The Who and The Beatles a bone, they all at least began their careers as just rock bands. The Doors were acid rock/head music
4 Tom Petty
5 Bob Seager
6 John Melloncamp
7 Elvis - tuff call due to so much of his popularity coming from ballades that had little "rock" but his importance goes without saying
8 Dire Straights ? fairly true to the rock form
9 Buddy Holly - importance
10 The Guess Who

other names will come to me that fit closely to being simply "rock", then maybe I'll revise

dire straits changed sounds a litte too much to be a regular rock band. i like mark knopfler though. i just got one if his solo albums

Zep
Floyd
Doors
Nirvana
AIC
Petty
Dylan
Hendrix
Pixies
Breeders
snd number one...
Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Genesis fans: What's one of Genesis's best songs? Something maybe less on the soft side? All I've heard from them is pristine garbage and I'd definetly put Yes, Rush, King Crimson, and pretty much any other prog band above them. But I've barely heard their stuff, so do enlighten me.

I've never gotten into Genesis either. Or Yes. Too overwrought. Actually, so is King Crimson. But at least they've got atmosphere.

Magma are by far my favorites in prog. Ah, so well structured.

Knopfler's great, I like his solo material far better than Dire Straits, personally. Which record did you get?

non straight up "rock" bands dont count unless you want to start throwing metal, new wave, disco, punk, folk, electronic keyboard layden 80's pop, boy bands, teen disney stars, R&B, rap, blues, rock fused jazz, and everything else under the sun in there. Put some work into it, jeezes... Led Zeppelin... Pink Floyd... yada yada yada, I currently cant think of a single Pink Floyd tune that even rocked... "Money" maybe ?... naw sorry that didnt even rock, head music thats what Floyd was.

Can't stand the Rolling Stones.

Aaaaaaaaaaaangie, ah shut up:p

Dire Straits are good.I have their best of compilation "Sultans of Swing."

Angie and White Horses great "love" songs of the rock era, certainly less cheezy balades than many of the pop balades... but they didnt rock. Im not big into the Stones myself with Paint it Black being my biggest stand out along with White Horses. But if you go way back, Satisfaction may have been first use of "distortion" (fuzz box)to hit the radio. Honky Tonk Woman, Jumpin Jack Flash first steps toward bad boy hard rock. They are simply too important to ignore whether you would throw down money for a recording or not.

So what you are really saying here is - they are to music as what your overwrought persistance at illustrating your low value of rhythmic understanding is... congradulations :Smokin:

Further congradulations goes out to Pat and others for heading a rock thread to a progressive thread... at least I know your heart is in the right place... :heh: but Im tying to stay focused on "rock".

Heres another name that brought forward some decent rock before he followed changing trends in pop to keep... popular

Rod Stewart

I mean, I like KC, but I don't listen them that much. In the Court is sometimes a chore to go through. Why ruin the album's flow with Moonchild? Or that slightly disgusting harsh sax section in Schizoid Man? I just don't like saxophone wankery. Reminds me of Van der Graaf Generator.

Epitaph is such a great KC song, though

i was at barnes and noble and saw an album called one take radio sessions for $7.00 after me B&N discount. haven't listened to it yet but its just a live in the studio e.p. of songs from an album called shangri-la. what is his best solo album?

Shangri-La is awesome. My personal favorites would probably be The Ragpicker's Dream and Sailing to Philadelphia. I can't really choose between those two.

Also razor, it ain't my fault my favorite rock bands are prog rock bands!!
